Amazon has announced a new update for its Kindle e-readers that includes a number of useful features such as Word Wise and Family Library. The free, over-the-air update applies to the newly announced $79 Kindle and Kindle Voyage as well as the most recent version of the Kindle Paperwhite.

Word Wise is particularly useful for children or those learning English. With the feature enabled, easy to understand definitions automatically appear above difficult words so people can keep reading without having to stop and look up definitions.

Tapping a word will bring up a card that can show the various meanings a word can have in different contexts, synonyms and more. The number of definitions shown in a particular book can be adjusted via a simple slider to show more or less depending on one’s reading level.

Family Library lets readers not only access their Kindle books, but also books from the account of a spouse or partner.

Other new features include Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, a $2.99 per month program that gives kids unlimited access to hundreds of age-appropriate chapter books and early readers. Amazon has also expanded its X-Ray feature, added deeper Goodreads integration and improved searching capabilities.

The update will be rolling out automatically over the coming weeks. For those who simply can’t wait that long, you can manually install the update by downloading it from Amazon’s website.
