Sony provided an update to its virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus, during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. While we still don’t have a price tag, the Japanese electronics giant said the PlayStation 4 accessory would go on sale next year.

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony’s worldwide studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, showcased a revised prototype that’s close to the final consumer product.

Enhancements to Project Morpheus are aplenty and include a new 5.7-inch display with a refresh rate of 120Hz – twice as fast as the previous iteration. Higher frame rates are always welcomed as they not only reduce lag but minimize the feeling of nausea when exploring the virtual world.

The OLED display also provides a 100 degree field of view and a resolution of 1,920 x RGB x 1,080. There are now nine tracking LEDs to provide 360 degree tracking, we’re told.

Sony has also reduced latency – the amount of time between when a user moves their head and the display responds – down to just 0.018 seconds (from 0.04 seconds last year).

While Project Morpheus looks similar to the initial prototype we saw last year, Sony has redesigned it a bit with usability in mind. The headset is now easier to put on and take off thanks to a single band design and quick release button.

More details are expected at E3 in June.
