Apple is hosting its Spring Forward media event today at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. Given the timing and innuendo in the invitation, we'd be shocked if Apple didn't dedicate nearly the entire presentation to its debut wearable, Apple Watch.

As the first new product category in five years and the first under Tim Cook's leadership, it goes without saying that there's an awful lot at stake here. Nobody really expected the iPhone to transform the smartphone industry the way it did. With the iPad, Apple more or less defined the modern tablet era. Many (myself included) question whether or not Apple will be able to pull off an encore performance in a category that thus far hasn't demonstrated a true purpose.

Smartwatch aside, many in the media also expect the Cupertino-based company to reveal its long-rumored 12-inch MacBook Air. There could be a few other surprises in store as well like a revised Apple TV (plausible) or an iPad Plus (doubtful). Either way, we'll know for sure soon enough.

Apple has temporarily closed its online store ahead of today's event - often an indication that something new is going up for sale or pre-order.

Those with Apple devices are invited to tune into the livestreamed event.
