Nikon Z9

This is the top of the line Flagship Z series camera, and we can tell. It has every feature imaginable, is beautifully made, performs impeccably and is every bit the professional photographic tool. It may seem large and heavy, but it actually melds well with the lenses and is very much a photographer's camera. The vertical grip is a nice touch as well.

The pro-level Nikon Z 9 is a big, fast-focusing camera that features a full-frame Stacked CMOS sensor, reintroduces the beloved 3D Tracking focus system, and offers class-leading support for ProRes Raw video.

The Nikon Z9 is perhaps the most complete camera we've ever tested. It shoots excellent 45MP images at up to 30fps (20 with Raw), it captures 8K video in everything from 8-bit MP4s to 12-bit N-Raw. Its autofocus system is both powerful and easy to use and works well for both stills and video. It's larger and heavier than some of its rivals, which make it less well suited to some applications, but overall it combines the best of a DSLR and a video camera in a single body.

The Nikon Z9 offers just about everything professional and enthusiast photographers might want from a camera. It’s big and heavy for a mirrorless camera, but it’s also twin-gripped, weather-sealed and a bit lighter than the Nikon D6.

The Z9 is Nikon’s most versatile and powerful mirrorless camera yet, and the lack of a mechanical shutter is a non-issue. It’s particularly strong for video, and will be a powerhouse once the RAW video firmware update arrives. However, Nikon’s decision to not use a fully articulating screen is a shame, considering all this awesome video capability.

It's fashionably late, but the Nikon Z9 makes a heck of an entrance. It blitzes the Sony A1 and Canon EOS R3 with its blistering 120fps burst shooting, 8K 60p capability, over 2½ hours of 8K 30p recording, and a dramatically lower price price tag (though the A1 still has it licked for resolution, while the R3 trumps it in ISO, image stabilization and the articulated screen). The amazing AF system has finally caught up to its rivals (though it takes a hit in video), the electronic-only shutter has yet to cause any headaches in artificial lighting, and the battery life is best in class. This could be the ultimate all-round hybrid camera.

The Nikon Z9 sees Nikon's mirrorless cameras take an impressive jump forward to match flagship rivals from Canon and Sony. The Z9 feels like an indestructible DSLR, but inside are innovative features like advanced AF tracking, 20fps raw burst shooting, 8K video and an electronic-only shutter. We also like its new two-way tilting screen. It's a shame some video features won't be available until a firmware update in 2022, but the Z9's video prowess impresses already and we're looking at a modern-day Nikon classic.
