Codemasters has been on a roll with its F1 series for a number of years now, and F1 2017 feels like the culmination of those years of work. Where F1 2016 lacked a little on the career side, F1 2017 more than makes up for that and then some more.

F1 2017 isn’t light years ahead of the already very good F1 2016 but the new cars, retro content, and the juiced-up career mode make a very strong case for the upgrade, and I really appreciated the enhanced force feedback on a wheel. Rich with details and faithful to just about everything that makes contemporary F1 tick, F1 2017 is about as good a simulation of a single, modern motorsport as you can get.

It’s in the sparks coming off the skid blocks in the uneven pavement of Shanghai’s backstretch; the drumroll of the kerb as I hit my racing line just right, the lens flare of a midsummer sunset making an easy bank at Silverstone into a perilous wide turn and a sudden fight with Daniel Ricciardo. It’s in the feeling that, after Codemasters has gotten so many things right about the thrill of racing, I can too.

And so F1 2017 makes a fairly convincing argument that maybe it wasn't so much better back in the day, and even if the sport itself isn't exactly going through a golden age the games inspired by it most definitely are. This is, I'm fairly confident, one of the finest official takes on motorsport there's been, earning a place alongside classics such as Geoff Crammond's own Grand Prix series or Papyrus' IndyCar Racing. Now, just imagine what this lot could do with the BTCC licence...

F1 2017 is the best representation of a complicated sport that Codemasters has offered. Offering its deepest and most authentic career mode, it draws players into the sport like no other F1 game ever has. You will learn the in-and-outs of the sport and feel like an engineer yourself. F1 2017 successfully hits 60 FPS at 4K resolution with a sacrifice in graphical detail. The racing is true-to-life on the track, but the A.I. is severely lacking. Fans of the franchise will really enjoy 2017.
