I've always had a soft spot for Full Throttle. I continue to love it still. Sure, it suffers from some of the genre's fallacies. But it was -and still is- wonderfully sharp-witted, deliciously funny, and tautly plotted. Enough of my yapping, though. Full Throttle has a tank full of fuel and a whole world to show you. Get going. The Polecats are waiting.

As it stands, Full Throttle Remastered is a perfectly fine way to spend a couple evenings, but all the trappings of a 1995 video game are just under the surface for better or for worse. That’s guaranteed to be a selling point to some people and majorly off-putting to others. For myself? I think I might have enjoyed Full Throttle Remastered even more if I’d played with a guide open the whole time, like a joyride through the nostalgia of other people.

Full Throttle is a relic of the time when games first really crossed the 2D/3D tech boundary, when designers devised a new set of rules for making games—with mixed results.

There’s no getting around that Full Throttle is a 22-year-old adventure game and still plays like it. The puzzles are occasionally frustrating. Your character moves at a slow pace, and some of cultural humor is outdated. Still, the quirks of the original game are as attractive today as they were then, and this version does a fine job smoothing out the rough edges, making Full Throttle Remastered a road trip worth taking.

Full Throttle may not have aged as well as its siblings, but it’s still a true gem nonetheless. This is largely thanks to some sharp writing, stellar and unique visuals, fun gameplay, and a kickass soundtrack. The remastered version serves to highlight and even enhance all of this, showcasing the kind of creativity Schafer and company could be capable of when at their best.
