Immortals Fenyx Rising

Seeing Fenyx’s saga through to the end, with amusing commentary from Zeus, Prometheus, and other gods along the way, is a treat. Its Achilles Heel, though, is that so much of the puzzle gameplay feels like going through the motions instead of clever challenges. In the end, I wish Immortals Fenyx Rising had tried to soar just a little higher on the wings of ambition.

The result is a game about mythology that somehow lacks a sense of mystery. It’s fun to play and I dare say I will keep chipping away at it for weeks to come, but say what you want about Norwich in the dark ages – at least there was real depth beneath all that mud.

The unsatisfying, weightless character movement is a real letdown, because there's no getting away from it. This is a game where you're constantly running, flying, climbing, and riding on horseback. But its unique take on Greek mythology, memorable characters, and fun quests do their best to make up for it, even if it doesn't always pull it off.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is far from perfect--but it is good. It stumbles frequently as it explores Greek myths through a new lens, its best features are borrowed, and for as large and fun as its world is, it always feels like you're on a guided tour instead of really exploring it.

Not only is it charming, but Immortals Fenyx Rising's world is a joy to explore and a complete blast to play. Stuffed with combat, collectibles, mysteries, puzzles, and a healthy dollop of family-friendly good-humour, there's a hell of a lot of bang for your buck. In fact, we've wasted enough time sat here writing about it – it's time to head back to Golden Isle and, hopefully, never leave it again.

Immortals Fenyx Rising has a strong argument for being the nadir of open world action-adventure games.
