In 1993, MicroProse and Simtex shoved the turn-based strategy genre on its ear with the release of Master of Orion. Putting players in control of a massive galactic empire, the game had an extremely high replayability factor and fun gameplay. As a...
A fun, serviceable update to the 4X legend that brings little memorable to the genre aside from its...
Master of Orion is a game with grand scope and massive scale, and more often than not, both work to its advantage. You explore outer space, colonize planets, and swing other leaders on a clandestine dance floor of galactic diplomacy, all with an...
There's not much that's outright wrong with Master of Orion, but there's not much memorable or endearing about it either. It's built on a moderately successful but bland execution of the inside-the-box space 4X formula. The moments when its flair for...
For the first few hours Master of Orion is perfectly enjoyable. The initial twenty turns or so are rather muted, as you've only got a handful of ships to command, and you must wait for the population on your colonies to increase before you can produce...
Master of Orion (or MOO) is a 4x turn based strategy game brought to us by NGD Studios and published by Wargaming. The original is over 20 years old and considered one of the greatest games of all time so it's easy to see why it's been chosen to be...
Compared to the more involved and evolved games that the original MOO inspired and to which lifelong genre fans have gravitated - the likes of Distant Worlds and Star Ruler - NGD's efforts will fuel some nostalgia, perhaps cause the odd tear to swell in the corner of an eye, but ultimately the game is too trifling, too willing to compromise accessibility for depth, and thus is a missed opportunity to push a beloved set of foundations forward after so many years buried in the past.
1993 was a splendid year for PC gaming - perhaps the very best there's been - with Dune 2, Syndicate, X-Wing and Myst all establishing or championing their respective genres. Today of course we're teased flickers of X-Wing in the forthcoming Star Wars...
