Overview

The Home Cinema 5050UB is an excellent projector. At $3,000 it's certainly not cheap, but for those looking to buy a PJ for a dedicated home theater or a light-controlled living room that can do its black levels justice, the image quality is definitely a step above less expensive projectors.

The Epson 5050UB is great for watching movies. It's bright, so it performs well in moderately lit rooms, but it's much better in dim or dark rooms due to its great contrast. The projector is bright enough to showcase its very wide color gamut, giving its image a vibrant look. The Epson's color accuracy is excellent out-of-the-box, and it looks fabulous after calibration due to the projector's 11-point white balance and full color calibration features.

While the Epson Home Cinema 5050UB 4K PRO-UHD Projector may not be a true 4K projector and you can purchase a flagship quality 4K TV with better image quality for a similar MSRP, this is the best projector you can buy for less than $3,000. With HDR10 compatibility, full P3 color space reproduction, and 3D playback, the Epson Home Cinema 5050UB is a movie lover's dream machine, producing sharp imagery with bold colors and generally pleasing black levels.

Epson has released a worthy successor to the popular HC 5040UB that makes subtle improvements in already superb image quality while retaining extremely high value.

The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB is an excellent projector for your home theater. I love the motorized lens with built-in lens shift that allows you to worry less about the placement. Even with the projector slightly to the side and higher than our display, I was able to adjust the lens in seconds using the backlit remote to get the perfect fit on my 110″ Elite Screens screen.

The Epson projector also offers notably better black level and contrast performance with 1080p SDR content, but there was hardly any difference on that score for HDR10 movies and little to no difference in their overall color accuracy and image sharpness with either 1080p SDR or UHD HDR content. And the HC5050 had shorter input lag time that may will be of value to gamers.
