When you need more room for your game collection, the Seagate X Vault HDD, with its vast quantities of affordable capacity, is a great alternative to currently very expensive SSDs. Performance is hardly SSD-like, but the drive does run off of USB bus power alone (15 watts required) so you don’t have to hassle with an AC adapter.

The Seagate FireCuda X Vault is available as an 8TB or 20TB external bus-powered USB-C desktop hard drive, with no external power required. While the drive’s aimed at gamers, the performance makes it perfectly suited for creative professionals who need affordable bulk storage on the desktop. Through the test, the hard drive's ability to deliver an average of 214MB/s read and 207MB/s write without slowing down proved it could be used for both storage and as a lightweight working drive. The bus-powered single USB-C cable cuts down on cable mess, and while performance lags well behind an SSD, especially when offloading a large-capacity CFexpress card, it’s still an exceptional value at £279.99.

Imposing and sturdy, the FireCuda X Vault certainly looks the part. Desktop PC users would be better off buying a bare SATA hard disk drive and installing that, but for laptop gamers, it's a great way to bump up your rig's storage.

Starting at $269.99 for 8TB, the pricing is competitive with other high-capacity external HDDs and considerably less than that of equivalent external SSDs. The RGB execution could be cleaner, the USB-C cable is short, and buyers should verify their host port can deliver 15W before committing. Those caveats aside, the FireCuda X Vault earns its spot on the shortlist for PC gamers, streamers, and media collectors who need ample local storage with minimal cable clutter.
