Apple’s first tracker, AirTag, is a handy, well made device that makes it quick and easy to track down your keys when they get caught behind the cushions of your sofa. But during testing we found there are plenty of areas of improvement.

The AirTag is a capable tracker with unique benefits including the Find My network and Precision Tracking, but the reliance on accessories may put some off.

The trackers themselves aren’t a guarantee that you’ll find your missing item, but the strength of the Find My network and the convenience of Precision Finding mean it’s probably a more likely outcome. That, the relatively low cost, and the absence of a separate subscription fee makes AirTag a no-brainer accessory for iPhone owners.

In many ways, this is how I’ve felt about a lot of first generation Apple products. The iPad, Apple TV, and Apple Watch all left me slightly cold and confused at the start, but evolved into truly fantastic bits of hardware that towered above their peers. Hands on: For now, though, Apple’s AirTags make a strong first impression. They’re cheap enough, they have user-replaceable batteries, the speaker is tremendously helpful, and Precision Finding is a breakthrough for the perpetually forgetful. I definitely still have some testing to do, but if you’ve already bought into the Apple ecosystem, AirTags are shaping up to be a no-brainer of a purchase.
