Power Consumption & Temperatures

The Radeon HD 5830 consumed 6% less power than the Radeon HD 4890 and matched the 4870 when under load. Despite being slower than the Radeon HD 5850, the 5830 actually uses more power due to its higher operating frequency. As a result we saw a 13% greater load consumption level.

The Radeon HD 5830 review sample we received from AMD used the same PCB design and cooler as the Radeon HD 5870. Therefore it is no surprise to find both cards operating at similar temperatures. While these results are accurate, they are somewhat irrelevant if AMD is right and its manufacturing partners end up using their own custom cooling solutions for outgoing Radeon HD 5830 products.
