In terms of performance, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE slots neatly between the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070. As we've said throughout this review, it probably should have been called the 9060 XT, and the current 9060 XT should probably be something like a 9050 XT. But the names are the names. What really matters is price and performance, and that's where the 9070 GRE runs into trouble.

Within the AMD ecosystem the RX 9070 GRE is definitely an interesting option. It helps fill the huge void between the RX 9060 XT and the RX 9070 non-XT, which you can find for $600 in the States. $50 more for 20% higher performance and 16 GB VRAM is tempting enough that many people will skip the GRE. To really appeal to the masses, and grab market share from NVIDIA, the GRE should be much closer to $500.

After testing the Radeon RX 9070 GRE — which stands for "Golden Rabbit Edition" — I can confirm it performs closely to the RX 9070. These GRE versions are typically lower-specced GPUs that AMD sells in China. If retailers can actually keep its price close to $549, it's one of the few semi-affordable options for decent 1440p gaming (with a dash of ray tracing). But if that price still sounds too steep to you, it may be worth waiting until next year to see how the hardware market fares.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE is an excellent middle-ground between the 9070 and 9060 XT. You do lose some VRAM, but that’s not a huge problem as long as you’re targeting 1440p.

AMD's new Radeon RX 9070 GRE arrives with 12GB of VRAM and promises fantastic 1440p gaming performance. And for the most part, it delivers, and with FSR 4, with SAPPHIRE's PULSE design presenting a viable alternative to the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and GeForce RTX 5070.

Of course, the text of this review will stay fixed in time, while GPU pricing will not. If RX 9070 and RTX 5070 pricing increases from its current $600 to $650 range, and/or the RX 9070 GRE’s pricing decreases way below $549 for some reason, and if you’re targeting 1440p rather than 4K, the RX 9070 GRE is still quite a bit faster than the 16GB version of the RX 9060 XT. But with things priced as they currently are, this one feels like it’s trying to fill a gap that doesn’t need to be filled.
