I priced an lga 775 mobo, and a Pentium D 2.66ghz 775 proc, and the total came to $1 more than the amd athlon 64 3500+ with the cheap mobo I was looking at. They both have 1 pci-express x16 slots, and ddr2 ram. Which is a better deal (I think it's the 775 although, I want to know other peoples opinion)?

EDIT:

*NOTE*
I have had good experience with ESC's Via Mobo's (Have one now).

Get the 775. That Pentium D is the worldwide king of overclockers. (not including core 2s) It can go to about 4.0 ghz. But that's not really why I say to buy it (although that has something to do with it). If you get that board, you can always either upgrade to Core2 later, and maybe Core3, or you could OC the hell out of that PD when it starts getting too slow. Plus, that board supports DDR2 so if you ever wanted to get faster memory you could. Another thing is that Intel plans to use LGA775 for a few more years at least while AMD will be retiring AM2 in as little as a year and a half.

I think I will, although wouldn't a dual-core machine kill a single core machine in performance? Is the AMD better because it has more L1 cache?

Depends..Most programs dont take advantage of Dual-Core and besides you can get Dual-Core with the AMD board..

I think im done with Intel, I have always used Intel, there really good processers but AMD has grabbed me..

I know, I read a review on the 3500+, and I am now almost eager to get it. I'll definitly stick with that.

Okay, cool cool.
What case do you have?

I can give you a Pentium 4:

Processor type Intel Pentium 4
Processor core Willamette
Processor markings 1.7GHZ/256/400/1.75V
Package type 478-pin FC-PGA2
Processor speed (GHz) 1.7
Bus speed (MHz) 400
L2 cache size (KB) 256
Qualification sample QFF9
Previous stepping SL59X
Manufacturing technology (micron) 0.18
Core voltage (V) 1.75
Case temperature (C) 76
Core Stepping D0
CPUID 0F12h
Core multiplier 17

Just send me your Address through e-mail or something..

But you should just get the new build.

Why not try Socket 939? It's pretty cheap since AM2 is overtaking it but recent enough so that u can find Socket 939 mobos with PCI-E x16 slots(even SLI-capable ones with 2 slots) and very good processors. And they'll be dirt cheap too. This is of course, unless u do not want to buy DDR2 RAM and/or want to be on the bleeding edge of recent hardware.
