Audio Problems w/ Xp sp2

Unfortunately I purchased an Emachine T1440.... os is windows xp with service pack 2 included... Soundblaster Live/24 bit is soundcard,,, my sound is stuttering and skipping.... Im baffled as it was initially working but w/in a few days the sound quality and performance quickly degraded.....any suggestions?
