7 Free Apps to Install on a New Windows PC

That's because there really is not that much difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10. And to be honest XP Mode was more of a pain than useful.

XP Mode worked fine for me on my desktop that I had until early 2014 -- which I built in late '08 as an early adopter of the Core i7 965 EE -- and it works fine on this 5 year old laptop that I bought used 2 years ago.

I've worked hard to make XP available from within W10 using VM Workstation but Windows 7 would add nothing.

Hopefully im not breaking any rule by this.I use a specific website for fresh install on windows.

Ninite.com

avoids the trouble of having to download one by one by giving u a selection of what you need and putting them all in a package together. meaning one extraction required

Yeah Window 7 and 10 are much alike. Unlike Window 8. And window XP was useless but it was the biggest invention that led to Window 7, 8, 10. I spent most of my time using Window Xp even window 7 was developed............... So I would say that window xp was the father of modern windows. :)

Trgz WINRAR will keep working even if you don't pay for it. It just nags you.

7-Zip is much better IMO. It's freeware and handles .rar files just fine. It's even faster than WinRAR. No nag screens and great performance, not to mention more versatile. No-brainer.

You will only appreciate or need XP if you have owned a computer for a good number of years and bought some expensive software that won't run on later OSs. I've got some very useful programs that won't run under anything else. There are games that I bought too but I've really given up on gaming. They had playability rather than concentrating on HD graphics and online play. Windows 7 is already covered if you have a Windows 10 system.

Just curious. Have you tried changing the compatibility mode of the old software?

Compatibility mode does not always work. I was dual-booting WinXP Pro & WinVHP on the desktop I mentioned earlier. For example, American McGee's Alice worked fine on Vista, but American McGee Presents: Scrapland would not run on Vista even changing compatibility wouldn't work, so had to play that one on XP.

I have used Win10 Pro twice over a year apart since it's release on this laptop -- same one I mentioned previously -- and there was software that I had that wouldn't run on Win10 that ran fine on Win7. So, Win10 isn't perfect, of course while I hate Win8/8.1/10 when I get a new laptop I know it's going to come with Win10...but for Win10 I use StartIsBack++ which I originally bought when I had bought Win8 about a month after that OS came out, and the key appears to be lifetime.

I was referring to XP Mode not Windows XP. The only thing wrong with Windows XP is the fact that it is dated. I never did figure out how to manage XP Mode during a system reinstall without needing to reinstall XP Mode. It should have been as simple as copying the virtual drive. But XP Mode was so integrated, you would break security certifications with new Windows installs. I finally stopped dealing with it completely.

When I updated from W10 Anniversary edition to the W10 Creators edition there was a message that Microsoft Live Essentials had been removed from my computer because it was not compatible. No loss because I don't even remember what it was but it's surprising that Microsoft let their own software become obsolete when they could easily release a patch. My wife loves Microsoft Home Publishing 1999 and one of the main reasons I make sure that XP is available is that MHP was designed for W98 and although it runs under XP it won't work on any more recent OS.
