Hello, I've only joined today, looking for a solution to malware that appears to be taking over my wife's computer. The computer is a Compaq CQ5110F desktop running Vista Home Premium SP2 (32 bit). Processor is AMD Athlon 7550 dualcore. 3.0 GB memory installed. Her account is unusable, a few seconds after logging in an "AV Guard Online" panel appears, describing all the viruses it found and requesting you purchase their product. It cannot be closed and Task Manager is apparently disabled. After a few minutes the screen is greyed out (except for their panel) and nothing else can be accessed. Ctl-Alt-Del still allows the user to log out or restart the machine. I seem to be able to run from my account without too much difficulty, although I used a different computer to find your website and join your community. Logging into my account did fail a few times, but I am writing this post from that account. I did see the 6 step preliminary malware removal thread even before I joined and tried installing the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program as described in the thread. It seemed to install from the desktop successfully, but when it started, it quit after a few seconds and cannot be run again. Starting the Anti-Malware program results in a failure alert "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may no have the appropriate permissions to access them" At this point I have decided I must ask for help. I do not know if the malware is damaging files or simply hijacking the computer.
