WOF: What's your browser homepage and why?

[Weekend Open Forum] In the beginning there was Yahoo, the ubiquitous homepage of choice for millions of Web users in the late 90s. Coming from an era when Web portals were hot properties and ISPs nearly forced you to use their own, many continue to devoutly rely on Yahoo as their start page to see what's new on the Internet and the world.

Over the years however many different options and trends have come and go on how to start your browsing sessions. From Google's simplistic search box approach to RSS-inspired personalized homepages like Netvibes and Pageflakes. Most recently social networks have elevated themselves as a source of breaking news and an effective way to connect with those around you. The browser itself has also impacted how you can start every session. For example, you can have it remember what tabs were open last time and take it from there, or you could set it up to open nothing (about:blank).

While we certainly encourage you to add TechSpot to your shortlist of first things to see when you browse the Web every day, in this week's WOF we ask you, what's your browser homepage and why? If you want to throw a brief story on how you used to code your own homepage filled with your favorite links back in the day (I did!) you won't hear us complaining. Discuss.

  1. Netvibes with personal notes, to-do list and weather.

  2. eBay! You know ...

  3. google.ca since I'm in Canada and it automatically jumps me from google.com.

  4. Blank page. Of course.

  5. Our family computer has Bing.com. Each day the kids get excited about what the image is and learning all about it. I really like the abilty to rollver the right side tab on each search result to get a quick look at the site without navigating to it. Very nice.

  6. I love my customized igoogle page.

  7. For Firefox, I have techspot as my home page (did have Google, but I figured since techspot is the first thing I visit and I have a google search bar in the corner of the browser, techspot as my homepage made more sense).

For Chrome, I have the speed dial as my home page. All I have to do is click the home button and there are all my favorite sites with a google search bar at the top for if I want to google something.

  8. iGoogle

w/ TechSpot, PlayStation Blog, Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewer News, Google News, MLB Scoreboard, Weather, Digg, Gmail, Horoscope and of course The How-To Geek

  9. I use opera and Google is my home page, but my browser opens to speed dial. Gotta love handy access to all my favorites sites with just one click!

  10. iGoogle for me, with all my tech news feeds.

  11. google...fast

  12. On Chrome (my main browser) I use the new tab page with all the thumbnails of often visited sites. On Pale Moon I use Bing as the home page... I love the pictures and I prefer the Bing search.

  13. Google.com, because it is small and open extremely fast also it comes with the browser I use Firefox for sure.

  14. On one computer I have Google; on the other the New York Times.

  15. Hate to say it, but Yahoo! is my homepage. It's a piece of crap, but I've been using it for years - probably for as long as Yahoo! has been around and now it's just a force of habit. I've customized it as much as possible to avoid all the "National Enquirer" crap they put on it, but still is pretty bad.

I just need to get off my duff and create my own or find something better. I like Guest's idea of Wikipedia as a start page - I'm there half a dozen times a day anyway.

  16. I use google on my primary browser (Opera) and IE's homepage is Bing

  17. Bing. My main search engine. Plus I like seeing the new pics they add every day. I leave Google as my secondary search engine through my main search tab in Firefox.

  18. hello ...

on all browsers: blank! but when i go on them - 5 fixed main tabs - Playstation Lifestyle / Steam / techspot / playfire / yahoo.

    when i do search: google

    fav browsers: Chrome & Firefox

    cheers!

  19. Mine is the google chrome new tab page

  20. wow lot of google Home pages out there....

Don't I feel the odd one out I use a modded Opera Speed Dial as my home page.

0 load time sense it's all local files, and access to more then I would want to spend time shacking a stick at.

Using simple URL shortcuts I can search from every search engine I want (Google, ebay, amazone, cuil, ask, gigablast, yippy, wikiapedia...etc)

42 thumbnail speed dial entries to all my most used Mail, hosting, web apps and BBS accounts + a couple web comics that don't use RSS feeds.

  21. I have about :blank as my homepage. Im tired of waiting for all that flash to load on fancy websites on my 700k connection each time I open my browser. Thus, if I had to choose an opening page different from that one, I'd choose Google for its simplicity.

  22. iGoogle with News, Sports, Weather and Google Trends on my list. I use the FF bookmarks toolbar for all my top news, tech and gaming sites I visit and TechSpot is number one on that list .

  23. [link]

    Default one

  24. Astronomy Picture of the Day.. Has been that for the past 9 and a half years.

Because i love the daily space photos.

  25. Sites: vwvortex.com and/or fourtitude.com

    Why: car fan
