WOF: What was the first game you played online?

[Weekend Open Forum] People who have been gaming for just a few years might take online functionality for granted. After all, with the latest generation of consoles you just need to pop in the game disc to start playing with someone across the globe -- provided you have an Internet connection and in the case of Xbox 360 owners, signed up for an Xbox Live subscription. But to get where we are today many years have passed since the early days of dial-up and BBS turn-based games -- or PLATO time-sharing systems if you go way back, according to Wikipedia.

You could say I was a bit late to the party if you consider remote gaming has been around, in one way or another, for almost four decades. But it was not until the mid-1990s that online games really blossomed. Around that time a friend borrowed me a copy of Command & Conquer, which included two CDs, one for the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and another for the Brotherhood of Nod, in order to make multiplayer gaming possible with a single purchase of the game. We had unreliable dial-up connections, but that didn't stop up us from playing until the wee hours of the morning.

I was blown away by the real-time strategy element, so it was a while before I started paying more attention to the first-person shooter genre that is also wildly popular amongst online gamers. Ironically, bearing in mind how the gaming landscape turned out, my first steps into the computer gaming world were made on a Mac.

We've asked you before about the first video game you ever played and the ones you are looking forward to. Today we want to know which title got you started into online gaming and which one has you hooked right now. Discuss.

  1. Starsiege: Tribes here too.

Too bad they oversimplified the sequels and killed the series.

  2. Ultima Online

  3. A MUD called Razor's Edge on a BBS when I was at Uni. After that it was Counter Strike before it was released as a retail product. Used to play over modem with my mate over Internet connection sharing with pings over 300

  4. The first game I played online: Battlefield 2.

Since I only had an Internet-uplink via a 56kbit/s modem during the late 90's, but a divorcal got rid of the uplinked computer, I didn't have any form of Internet-uplink until 2008. Battlefield 2 was very hot at that time (where I lived), so I decided to purchase it.

  5. Diablo, then Unreal Tournament 2003

  6. The mighty DOOM II

  7. Red Alert FTW!

  8. Crimson Skies over dial-up connection. The next one i tried online was C&C 3 a few times. I just never have enjoyed online gaming at all. I prefer single player campaigns or even skirmishes.

  9. played delta force and mechwarroir

  10. Ghost Recon for the PS2...Boy they were good times.

"No rockets this time ok ?"...."ok"....Boom !!!..."YOU CHEATING @!&:# !!!"...hee hee good times.

  11. Half-Life

  12. Unreal Tournament 2004!

  13. The original Delta Force; I have some good memories from that game.

  14. c&c!

    oh and Half-Life DM!

Back when <300 ping was good times!

  15. I have NEVER played ANY game online, I did however try to hook two computers together with a null modem cable once or twice so my brother and I could play a doom(the original)death match but, I never could get It to work.

  16. chess

  17. Quake. Specifically, the Pain Keep mod. That really got me into online gaming. Doom was the beginning, although it didn't work with the internet, so Quake was the first game I officially played online for a long time.

  18. Quake 2 was the first game I ever played online...that was back in the 90's. Would fire up that old dial up connection and play all night!

  19. Duke Nukem for DOS was the first game I played online. I never had a TEN account, so we had to dial into each others PCs and play one on one. It never stopped us from having a good time. I can remember how we have to reboot to DOS to start Duke up. I couldnt even imagine it being like that now. Thank god for match making.

  20. NHL 94

  21. Age of Empires and The 4th coming as MMORPG,

  22. Descent was a riot back in the day. I was so addicted to that game.

  23. I started playing a game called Star Kingdoms years and years ago. They are still around, but I haven't played since I graduated to WoW and FFXI. But, for what it was, it gave me many hours of fun. It was basically a text-based war game where you build up a kingdom and try to conquer everyone else's land. Ah, those were the days, sitting on AIM chat with alliance leaders waiting for the order to take down a target. Or, refreshing the page like mad at the round reset when everyone only had dialup and there was insane lag.

I'm glad it's still around. That was a fun game. Hmm maybe I will make another kingdom and reminisce.

  24. I actually ran a C-Net (Commodore) BBS back in the day, which had a few very simple games online. I also played Modem Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem_Wars). Played several LAN (IPX) based games (NetWars, Duke Nukem 3D, some Battleship like game, Hearts and Chess) and then LAN (IP) based games (Quake). When the internet got going played the same basic IP based games with someone hosting a server. I had a lot of fun back then, ah the memories...

  25. Well if LAN counts I think it was Starcraft, otherwise Diablo 2 was the first game I play over the Internet. Although on crappy dial-up I use the word "play" loosely.
