Weekend Open Forum: The most underrated video games

By

It's a cold hard fact of life: we can't all be winners. No matter how fun or unique a video game may be, the reality is, there's a chance it's destined for the eternal void that is Best Buy's bargain bin. Those odds increase substantially if the title isn't backed with media hype or the marketing budget of a multi-billion dollar publishing conglomerate. Even then, undeservingly harsh critics can steer consumers in the wrong direction. And sometimes, by the mysterious workings of an unjust universe, awesome games just slip between the cracks.

Whatever the case may be, we know there are hundreds, if not thousands of gems that have been tragically overlooked -- and you've undoubtedly come across at least one. A few examples from the last decade include Psychonauts, No One Lives Forever, and more recently, The Saboteur. Although we generally favor PC game discussions, all platforms, generations and genres are welcome in this edition of our Weekend Open Forum, so grab your soapbox and tell the world why a certain under-appreciated game deserves a little more attention.

  1. lol the Saboteur is terrible...

  2. I was a big fan of the Thief Series and enjoyed Thief III. It didn't have expansive feel of the first two, but it was still a lot of fun. Some of the fan missions were excellent too.

I also have fond memories of DeusEx. For sheer play value, story, and lush graphics, my favorite game might just be Giants: Citizen Kabuto.

  3. i enjoyed the saboteur, together with Mirror's Edge, as ritwik7 suggests.

  4. I'm midly suprised, but then again I'm not, that Ultima VII wasn't mentioned. Ultima VII stands as my favorite game of all time.

And in relation to that, Warren Spector of Ultima Underworld I and II (neither of which I've played, or been able to find to play) fame worked on both Deux Ex and Thief: The Dark Project mentioned above.

And as someone else also mentioned, Clive Barker's Undying was a fantastic game, as well. When it came out, a friend and I played it and were terrified out of our skulls by it.

  5. The Privateer series and MS Freelancer

    Best forgotten games to date

  6. i think Phantom Dust for the original xbox is one of the most underrated games of this generation imho.

  7. Prince of Persia shadow and the flame is my personal favourite of the series, which came after the first prince. I agree that these are far more entertaining and to those day i can't complete it although I can finish every other modern video game.

I think that p of p shadow and the flame and

Shadow of Memories for ps2 is particularly underrated.

  8. I picked this out of a discount bin, for five bucks, at Tandy two years ago.

    Plays great on Windows 7.

Scar ( Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo) by Blackbean Games, 2005.

    Great game physics engine.

Balances sufficient realism with responsive, challenging driving.

Well thought out driver challenges and advancements.

11 tracks from around the world (Laguna Seca, Hockenheim, Donnington, Michelin etc).

26 Alfa's to race in, from Rookie to Unlimited tours, each qualifying, tourneys and championships. In your face racing.

A really well executed piece of game software.

If you enjoy driving and great gameplay, find a copy of Scar.

    Sound 10/10

    Graphics/fx 9/10

    Game engine/physics 9/10

    AI 10/10

    Game Play 10/10

    Menu navigation 7/10

I thought Need for Speed was good, until I started playing this.

  9. Two very honourable mentions here.

First of all, the original Theme Park for the Amiga. This was the proper theme park, before it got the kiddie console treatment. It felt like a proper sim game, with all the real world elements, including negotiating with union bosses over the staff pay, whilst still having a very fun feel to it.

And the second is Secret of Evermore. It didn't do too well as far as sales were concerned and it was a bit short, but it was a very well thought out, western RPG. It was made by the West, for the West, it had a lot of comedy elements in there that came across quite well, without any hint of trying too hard and I loved it.

  10. Emperor: Battle for Dune, released in 2001. Was famous for a little while, disappeared in a heartbeat. Absolutely the best Dune-based game in my opinion, still it was (and still is) very under-rated.

Probably because Command & Conquer stole the show. Still, all hail the RTS-king!

  11. Advent Rising was so awesome. I was pretty bummed when the rest of the series got canked.
