WOF: Do you browse the web with your phone?

[Weekend Open Forum] In the past few years we've seen a number of smartphones and mobile operating systems burst onto the scene and drive mobile Internet usage through the roof. It's difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary significantly depending on whom you ask, but some estimates even claim the number of mobile Internet users will be higher than that of users browsing the web via a desktop computer by the year 2014.

Today the majority of mobile Internet consumption comes from users of iOS, Android or BlackBerry devices splitting their time between emails, browsing, and social networks. The benefits of mobile browsing are pretty obvious: you can access information anywhere at any time. But there are also a few shortcomings like carriers' expensive data plans and their all-too-common usage caps. Plus, you can't beat the comfort of surfing the web at home on a larger screen.

Today we want to know about your mobile browsing habits. Do you use your phone to get online? How often? We've attached a simple poll after the break, but if you are a regular mobile Internet user we'd love to hear what type of activity you are using it for and what your most-frequented destinations are. Discuss.

  1. I wonder if my Ericsson Z500a even has a browser! lol xD

  2. I can on my phone, but i dont

  3. I can't live without using my phone for internet. I'm constantly checking things out, without 3G i'd go crazy. No 4G up here yet, but ill surely make the switch when its in Canada.

  4. I hate browsing from my phone so try not to, not even check facebook although a lot of people have become slaved to it. Mainly I use it to read mails.

  5. I sometimes use the phone... But i use the pc mostly!

  6. Only if I really have to. Browsing on a phone with a 320x320 display and a slow CPU isn't that much fun.

I use my Touch 2 windows phone to browse the web all the time. Both in my house over wifi and out and about using mobile internet. Navigate to this website sometimes via mopbile web as well, along with checking email, news and watching youtube videos. Yesterday I followed by ttrip to London using google maps and the phones inbuilt sat-nav. (kinda classes as Mobile web use right!)

Some say Win mob sucks, i have no beef with it, does what I want it to. battery life on the touch 2 a bit crap when using Net and Sat nav tho.

Are you talking about the touch pro 2 from HTC? This is the phone I have. I have so many problems with it I couldn't even begin to point them all out. The phone is a hunk of crap. It does what it needs to do, only in the dumbest ways possible.

  9. Almost 100% of the web browsing I do is from my phone.

I have a Motorola Droid 1 rooted running Cyanogenmod 6.0

  10. Nope. I have plenty of time for the internet at home and at work. I have the ability to use it if needed, but that need hasn't arisen yet, and I highly doubt it will.

  11. Almost 100% of the web browsing I do is from my phone.

  12. I still don't see the lure of a $100 a month cellphone when such great prepaid options are available. This is a recession, people Think of it; surfing the web WHILE DRIVING on a 3 inch screen. And now I'm told no cell phone works with IPv6, the next generation of ip addresses, the current of which (IPv4) we will run out of in less than 2 years.

  13. I use the web from my phone at least 4 or 5 times a day, Mostly to look up info, when a question pops into my head. Unbeatable for that. Or looking up stores and what name you. Hell sometimes i hook up my laptop and use my HTC as a Router. and yet i never even get close to my 500mb limit. I can only imagine i'll use it more rather than less in the future.

  14. Nope. Never do. Mostly calls, with a bit of texting on my Razr. It has a web browser, but I never felt the need to pay for internet service on it from my cell phone provider.

  15. Browse a bit on my HTC Touch HD with Opera Mobile browser, mostly just on longer public transport journeys. Checking mail, bit of youtube, checking imdb or gracenote for film/music details etc. etc. But most of the time prefer to use a PC as most of the time I'm at work with a PC in front of me or at home

  16. I only use it when I don't have access to a computer and it's less than ideal since it's NOT an HTML browser. Hope to upgrade to a droid soon to hopefully make the browsing better.

  17. From time to time, but mostly on mobile-optimized websites.

  18. I couldn't have said it any better. I've contemplated upgrading to a high end smartphone with android but I just don't enjoy the browsing experience enough to fork over the cash for the hardware or monthly charges.

I'll stick with my E72 which I can browse over wifi if necessary and perhaps look at a tablet computer until the transformer phone comes.
