Sony's Kevin Butler tweets PlayStation 3 security key

Sony's Kevin Butler, a fictional character portrayed by actor Jerry Lambert in the "It Only Does Everything" advertising campaign for the PlayStation 3, today accidentally retweeted the USB dongle ID generator key, also used for PS3 security circumvention. The tweet has since been removed, after someone from Sony probably told him what he just did.

It all started when Travis La Marr used his @exiva Twitter account to tweet the key sequence and challenged @TheKevinButler to "Come at me." Butler confused it for a Battleship reference and retweeted the entire code:

Lemme guess... you sank my Battleship? RT @exiva: 46 DC EA D3 17 FE 45 D8 09 23 EB 97 E4 95 64 10 D4 CD B2 C2 Come at me, @TheKevinButler

It's rather ironic that this happened just after we learned that Sony is threatening to sue anybody posting or distributing the jailbreak code for its PlayStation 3 gaming console. The electronics giant even demanded that a federal judge order Google and Twitter to surrender details of those involved. It looks like this time Sony won't have to go to the courts; the company can just check its own marketing department.

  1. You know I've been watching boondocks all day and good thing too cause this is the perfect moment to say:

"Dats the dummest shiieehut I've EVA seen in maai laaife!!!!!!!!!!!"

  2. If anything these code releases will boost sonys ps3 sales.

  3. 100% on purpose, no fails here except those who thought it was an accident.

OK my sarcasm radar is on the fritz lately but wouldn't the fact that they removed the tweet be evidence that it was an accident?

No. That's just part of the plan to make it look more convincing. This is Sony, after all, big time funders of the RIAA who like to sue 12-year-olds!

At any rate, I'm really liking this Kevin Butler character more and more. They really picked the right actor for it -- the most memorable moment was how he laughed at Sony when they asked him to return the uber-expensive sports car.

  6. I can believe that this Kevin Butler character put the tweet up there on purpose, independently, but i find it hard to believe that Sony, giving everything they have been trying to do prevent the PS3 security key from being distributed, was behind it all along. You have an interesting view of the world my friend.

I'm with you. No doubt Lambert put it up on "accident". I don't believe Sony had any part in it. They just figured "oh, he accidentally did this, we need to take it down and just slap him on the wrist and all will be fine."

  8. Guess he does not practice safe Hex!
