Weekend Open Forum: Storage capacity in your main rig?
In the world of computer storage, solid-state drives have stolen the limelight when it comes to performance. It seems incredible to think that in a one year span manufacturers are almost doubling the performance of their drives, with some of them now reaching insane ~500MB/s read speeds. But SSDs are still far from becoming mainstream. If you are looking for raw capacity at a price that won't break the bank, you'll still need a good old hard disk drive.
Thankfully these platter-based devices have come a long way in terms of areal density and cost per GB, enough to satisfy our always-growing storage needs. Just head to your favorite retailer and you'll be able to score a 3.5-inch desktop hard disk drive with 2TB capacity for around $80 and a 3TB model starting at $140.
In this Weekend Open Forum we want to ask you: How much storage capacity is in your primary PC? You can elaborate on any external storage solution you have in place to support your main rig. Also, as a bonus for those of you who have been in this for a while, do you remember how much storage capacity was in your first computer?

I have a 160GB first-gen Intel SSD, a Raptor 150GB secondary HDD and two other internal drives for storage, one 500GB (it used to be so big) and a newer 2TB drive. I have another 2TB external hard drive for storage but I don't use it that often to be honest.
Vertex 3 is tempting, perhaps I can graduate the Intel SSD to my laptop or something.

120 GB OCZ Vertex 2, 1 x 74 GB Raptor (pagefile and temp folders), 2 x internal 1TB, 1 x external 1TB, and 2 external 2TB... (oh, and a 320 GB external for my laptop that has a 250 GB internal).

Storage capacity of my PCs when compared to others is bit meager but sufficient enough for my needs:
1x 200GB Barracuda + 500 GB WD CB = 700GB
Plus 320GB external passport drive.

Internal, 4 x 1Tb in raid 10 configuration for data storage, 1 120Gb SSD for Program, 1 60Gb for Win and cs5 swapfailes.
External. 1 4Tb WD Sharespace in raid 5 configuration, 2 x Seagate 1.5 Tb USB for for rotating offsite backup.
My first drive was a mighty WD 420mb drive when the usual was around 40 - 80 Mb. How would I ever fill it?

I have a 400GB (5,400RPM) hard drive in my laptop, with 1TB (7,200RPM) of external storage. I often use my 16GB flash drives to move stuff around, and the dual 73GB SCSI drives (15,000RPM) in my servers whenever I'm downloading.

Current PC is 500GB + 250GB; 500 is the main one for Windows + Program (separate partition). 250 is for everything else.
First PC? Much more recent than most: 13GB ATA 91360U4 Maxtor, still in use as a linux boot drive (on a backup PC; the original 80GB is used for storage). It's been on for 1.6 years, with 5143 power cycles. Still works fine.

roughly 2TB not including the 80GB SSD drive with my OS

1.25 tb, and 80gb for mobility.
Don't need any more than that.

My first PC didn't had any 'internal' storage', and first ever HDD was a massive 30MB drive.

Yeah I remember all about my computers...
First was a NEC V30 8086 compatible @ 4.7MHz with only a 20MB HDD,
antd then...
2. AMD K5 @ 100 MHz 2GB HDD,
3. AMD K6-2 @ 550 MHz 20GB HDD,
4. AMD Sempron (K7) @ 1.66 GHz 160 GB HDD
5. AMD Sempron (K8) @ 1.8 GHz 160 GB HDD too,
6. (Upgrade from 5) AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2.5 Ghz 2x160 GB HDDs, and
7. AMD Phenom II X3 @ 3.2 GHz 2x160 and 2x500 GB HDDs.

i hav 6 WD caviar green 3 tb drivs in raid 0
and use a 960 gb revodrivex2 as my primary drive

1. 2x 128GB Gskill SSD Drives for programs and games (256GB)
2. 2x 150GB WD 10k Raptor Drives For programs and games before my SSD's(300GB) I Can't seem to get rid of these, Just in case the ssd's dont work out/ now used as extra fast storage (movies, torrents, etc)
3. Drobo 4 bay with 3x 2TB WD Green Drives , and 1TB WD Green Drive, for a total of 6.4 TB RAW data and (4.5TB) Available for "beyond RAID" storage. not the fastest, but stupidly easy, reliable, and upgradeable.

In my main rig I have a 30gb Vertex boot drive and 2 x 320gb samsung f4 in raid 0 (will add two more at some point). It's pretty empty because I have a 12 TB WHS v1 for storage.

I currently have a 1TB Hitachi 7200 rpm for both boot and storage, and I'm perfectly happy with it. I also have a 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 for back-up in an external rack, connected via e-sata.
I haven't gone for an SSD because prices haven't dropped at all recently and moreover, the new 6 gb/s SSD's are even more expensive than the old ones. I'm waiting for another year at least to upgrade my mobo and get a decent 6 GB/s controller.
My first rig had a Pentium 4 (just released !!) and a massive 80GB WD hard drive. That was pretty huge for me

My first computer was an AST 100Mhz with 8MB RAM, it had a 1.3GB WD HDD.
Through the years I've gone through pretty much all of the released WD Raptors...
I was disappointed in the last released VelociRaptor series and decided to go for a Seagate Cheetah 15k.7 300GB SAS drive, it's really fast and quiet and I'm very happy with it...
For storage I have 3x WD RE2-GP 1TB harddrives in a RAID5 array.
All four drives are connected to a LSI 8704ELP PCIe RAID controller...
