Weekend Open Forum: Your favorite music and streaming sources
Music is among the most primitive forms of entertainment and self-expression, with the oldest confirmed musical instrument -- a bone flute -- dating back at least 35,000 years, and it's believed the human voice, hand clapping and other bodily-derived noises were used to produce rhythmic melodies long before then. Fast forward to the present day and we have instant access to millions of songs spanning thousands of genres and sub-genres containing everything from blue dudes wailing on PVC pipes to CGI pop stars (for better or for worse).
With the advent of smartphones and streaming services like Spotify and YouTube it's never been easier to drown out a boring conference with your preferred tunes. With that, we want to ask: what's your favorite music and how do you access it? Feel free to share your favorite genres, artists and songs (links must be legal). I can't say I have a particularly favorite genre, though I tend to favor music without vocals -- anything from classical to electronic. That said, I've probably listened to Pink Floyd's "Animals" album more than anything else in my collection.

I'm the guest you quoted. I made an account just to reply back to you. Now, I can see you think negatively of hip-hop and I'm not surprised. If you think it's so negative, perhaps you should find out who people like Lupe Fiasco are. Chamillionaire put out an album, with ZERO profanity from him and no degrading subject matter, how's that line up with your interpretation of rap? Well, it doesn't. Because your interpretation isn't correct. I don't deny that type of rap you described doesn't exist, because it does. I'm just saying your complete and entire assumption about the genre is incorrect.Listen, if the best you can up with, is to cite one example of rap music being nothing I said it is, that's sort of impotent, isn't it? One exception doesn't negate a greater reality.
Oh, here is one for you. Ryan Leslie. He is a rapper and check this out. He graduated from Harvard at 19 and got a perfect score on the SAT. And yes he is African American.

Did you watch that video? Yes, he plays multiple, real, instruments also. If your ignorance is so thick that you can't even come to realize that all is not as it seems, then I likely won't reply back to you. One more thing, you think rap is made for blacks? How about you check out that statistic that shows more white people listen to rap than black. Also, four white rappers off the top of my head, Eminem, Paul Wall, Classified, Yelawolf. Try not to be so ignorant next time.
One last thing, just because a certain type of music originated from a certain ethnic group doesn't restrict it to staying that way. I know black people that are huge rock/metal fans. I also know white people that enjoy rap. So like I said, try not to be so ignorant, it can really help your understanding of things if you have an open mind.
I really don't feel like arguing race, politics or music, but apparently you're going to insist that I do.
Since I live in an all "African American" "community", and I hear the gunfire, the foul mouthed pointless lyrics, watch the drug dealing, and see the bodies lying in the street, I consider myself more knowledgeable than someone who just got here, 40 years too late for the civil rights movement. I "live this (bad)dream", instead of watching it on "YouTube", as an awestruck wannabe.
In 2008, Barack Obama was elected president of the United States. By the time the results were counted, every "African American" in the US thought that he, (or she), was somehow a different person. The welfare recipients got the same checks and food stamps, the dealers were still pushing the same crap in lieu of working, but somehow, now they magically had more social status.
So, only one persons status actually changed, that of Barack Obama. And yes, I voted for him, in full knowledge of this eventual outcome. That was pretty much a slam dunk, considering that the alternatives were John McCain and Sarah Palin. But, fact of the matter is, this is America, so we never really vote "for" somebody, we vote against the other person.
But yes, "black music" can become, "white music"! That was fifty years ago, and to this day, we refer to it as, "golden oldies". You're decades late for that revelation as well!
So, the great majority of hip hop is, "for the ghetto, by the ghetto, and of the ghetto". Gee, ain't it grand, the basic tenets of our constitution put into play.
Don't call me "ignorant", get your face out of "YouTube, and get a good education That way, you'll get a good job, and pay a lot of income tax, so that the 300+ pound government entitlement cows that lumber up and down my street all day, will be able to maintain that weight, and wreck the health care budget at the same time.
And so we don't get off topic, they lumber along to the sound of vulgar, racist, ethnically oriented hip hop music, playing out of badly distorted, peace disturbing car stereos.
And yes, I love loud music, it just needs to be loud and sound clean.
And as for "M & M", you can bet that clown became "Marshall Mathers" once again, when he walked into court on weapons charges, with his big, foul, yap shut.
One last thing, the whole, "I joined so I could tell you off and point out the error of your ways", thing, doesn't impress me.
I categorically don't care whether you're a TS member or not, and that's whether you agree with me, disagree with me, love me, or hate me. So don't claim that I put you up to joining.

Anyway i listen to any and all music, through spotify, pandora, last, and any other means. there usually isn't a point in my day when there isn't music!

What I listen to:
The Beatles- they make up 371 out of my 1.2k songs, XTC, Death Cab for Cutie, Coldplay, Locksley, Vampire Weekend, Andrew Bird, Suzanne Vega...
I've never really used any music streaming service. About 85% of my music comes from CD's, and the rest from friends or iTunes.

I'm addicted to music in general.. but my love is house/dance.. as far as streams, my favorite is http://pressureradio.com - almost always live djs playing from the entire global (station is based in uk) mostly soulful and deep house, my 2nd alternative is Pandora, but if I'm buying that hard to find house/dance it's www.traxsource.com
and on a side note: can we please have one open forum w/o the off topic diatribe of race/politics?

Also, I usually find everything I look for. Amethystium mostly. But also Yello, Alexandrov choir, and Pulstar!

When I do listen to music, I use the radio. Its free and when a commercial comes on I just change to another station. I don't buy music nor do I illegally download it because:
1. I don't support artists too dumb not to realize that the RIAA is ripping them off.
2. Music since the mid to late 90s basically has sucked.
Sorry to burst your bubble Hip Hop fans but being able to rhyme,using heavy amounts of bass, adding some popular song looping in the background, and using Autotune does not make a good singer.
