Music is among the most primitive forms of entertainment and self-expression, with the oldest confirmed musical instrument -- a bone flute -- dating back at least 35,000 years, and it's believed the human voice, hand clapping and other bodily-derived noises were used to produce rhythmic melodies long before then. Fast forward to the present day and we have instant access to millions of songs spanning thousands of genres and sub-genres containing everything from blue dudes wailing on PVC pipes to CGI pop stars (for better or for worse).

With the advent of smartphones and streaming services like Spotify and YouTube it's never been easier to drown out a boring conference with your preferred tunes. With that, we want to ask: what's your favorite music and how do you access it? Feel free to share your favorite genres, artists and songs (links must be legal). I can't say I have a particularly favorite genre, though I tend to favor music without vocals -- anything from classical to electronic. That said, I've probably listened to Pink Floyd's "Animals" album more than anything else in my collection.
That's the underlying "grand hubris" of Rap. It's performed by people that believe that what they have to say, is too important to bother with trying to learn to sing. If they discovered they didn't have the talent for it, that would deprive the world of their "monumental revelations", and "gravitas opinions"! we couldn't have that now could we?
Yeah we could, and for that matter, should.
And here's why......
Techspot offers these "Weekend Open Forums", to encourage non members to participate. This is to the sole end of increasing web traffic at this site.
So, if I post something that encourages laughter, angers people, or vaguely advances the discussion in any way, that produces traffic.
"A click, is a click, is a click"! So therefore, if I anger people enough to ring in to argue with me, call me a troll, or laugh along with me, those clicks count just as much as the the clicks the site isn't going to get from your post I'm quoting.
And yes, I fully anticipate that many of my posts, and the rebuttal posts they generate will have to be pulled. I've reconciled that, I'm good with it, it's a "necessary evil", (or perhaps, "necessary good", depending on viewpoint). End of story.
The snot nosed teenagers I have a habit of angering, certainly won't be buying from the "targeted advertising" on this site, but their clicks count anyway, now don't they?
The hit parade for this afternoon includes Lynyrd Skynyrd, Doobie Brothers, Collective Soul, Staind, Dire Straits, Boston, Connexx, Outlaws, Eagles, Supertramp, Disturbed, U2, Tull, Eric Clapton, Pat Benatar, Phil Collins and for the grand finale a good dose of Led Zeplin.
Did you know that Mark Knopfler picks all that s*** with his fingers? (As does Lindsey Buckingham. But since you didn't include Fleetwood Mac or Stevie NIcks, I suppose that point is moot).
Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull always provided the most "Shakespearian" concert experience. Why, him with his cod piece, and us with our tetrahydrocannibinol recreational resources, were the perfect match. I still think, "Hunting Girl", (from "Songs from the Wood"
, should have gotten a Grammy. But then the rest of his material should have also.
And then the Zeppelin. Being a relic of that time period and exposed to "Stairway to Heaven" several times a day, I no longer premeditatedly play it on the stereo. But, I can play it on the guitar. (Which seems to be sort of as right of passage for anyone who's ever picked up a guitar. So maybe I shouldn't say that so loud...) ! Gotta jet now,I think I hear a, "bustle in my hedgerow"....... ![]()
I like rock/metal. I like to listen to bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Disturbed, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. I normally purchase these off iTunes, but still do buy the odd CD

How do you know a necessary evil from an unnecessary one?? lol, Fact is ALL music comes from the experience of the human soul and that as no color. THAT'S the End of story, Or the beginning of music as creation sees it.
For such an open minded person, you sure seem closed minded or only able to take things in in the context you see it. As if its your world and we all live in it. Hahaha

"Music" takes on a color when it begins to spray around racial epithets, randomly and indiscriminately. A sizable portion of rap music does this, day in day out. I don't think it's actually "music", you apparently and mistakenly do.
If you want to deal with a true egomaniac, who is convinced that this is his world, and we just live in it, pick up anything by Jean Paul Sartre. When you're done, I expect you'll you'll prefer listening to my s***, in lieu of his shtick.
Get back to me when you've actually got your head around an issue in which your own a** won't get handed to you so easily.
That's a mighty big screen "handle" you've chosen. Think you're special, ey? Maybe you should take up working in porn, rather than badly fumbling with politics.

The problem is that those two statements cant co-exist. You no sooner get done accusing someone of being solipsistic, and then make an absolute "end of story" statement yourself while claiming to know about creation.
I guess my 'soul' really digs power cords at times...and then is amused that the vandals stole the handle. (if thats okay with creation )
hello ...
like a bit of everything. fav artists would be Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Jean Michel Jarre, Alanis Morissette, Charles Aznavour, Johnny Hallyday, Oliver N'Goma, a lot of local ones & can listen to classical or new age music for hours & love to dance the 'sega mauricien' (Sandra / Linzy / Cassiya / Sylvain K / D Clarel / JC Gaspard :P) & 'sega / maloya of the indian ocean (Dominique Barret / Patrick Victor / Baster)
being limited geographically, I stream off youtube, grooveshark, former desitouch.com, musicME & online radios (last.fm a little). I buy MP3s off musicME, virgin media, sumthing digital, mauritunes.com, considering napster & buy CDs for most local artists.
everything else would come from local radios & tv/sat channels!
would really love to see spotify & other music sites available to Mauritius :P
cheers!

As I age, I find the spectrum of music that I enjoy gets wider. I listen to most everything from time to time. I have music stored in various forms, LPs, 45s, Cassette, 8-Track, CDs, MP3s, etc. I have collected it from Record Stores, Radio and from the internet. I now mainly listen to music over the Radio, You Tube and Pandora. I purchase it mainly from Amazon. Music is a part of the soul, so everyone enjoys it in one form or another. No music is better or worse than others, it's all a matter of personal choice. Enjoy...
I use Grooveshark and my zune pass to listen to any music I want to!

Quoted for truth.
That is enough g4mer and Captaincranky.
Aw Leeky, my last post was headed directly to the top of the hip hop charts.
No hard feelings though... ![]()

("The soul" AFAIK, is a fantasy generated by man's overwhelming fear of death, and paranoid delusions of immortality).
I'm very sorry you feel we people are just the "sum of our memories" like a computer and nothing more. It explains a lot as to why it sounds like your outnumbered and picking sides where you reside. Artists like
K.R.S.-1 /The Roots(Jimmy Fallon's late nite house band) /Talib Kweli (Actually roomed with jimmy Fallon for a bit)
They all speak about pulling and keeping your yourself out of a negative, spiteful point of view that usually spawns notorious minds instead of believing & creating something better regardless of where you reside or the experiences around you. The multi-subject wordplay and rhymes on multiple syllables may take a bit more attention than you like. Although you must be able to adapt quite quickly with your well practiced skill of taking any subject and twisting it to your own. Unfortunately 1)The topic 2)Your Audience & 3) Your purpose is lost when you take your intelligence to..

I'm in college @ the moment and study politics with personal investments in certain directions that I believe will help so i usually don't have time to get into these discussions. I must make time during my free time and I was compelled to how YOU make a great case study of "how minds are being poisoned regardless of the race or aptitude". *shrug* Just saying...
"Much success to you, even if your wish be the opposite/ sooner or later we'll all see who the prophet is"---Nas in "Nas is like"
Like I said before, you need to come down to my hood, see the violence, watch the drug dealing, see the social security abuse from people who have simply eaten themselves into major overhauls, experience the >>literally, generations of federal entitlement housing, the food stamps being sold for drugs. And all the while, the most vulgar, profane, racist, sexist hip hop and rap music coming blasting out of car stereos turned up well past amp clipping, by people who to stupid, ignorant, and tone deaf to know the difference.
As to your endeavors with politics, I wish you well. Perhaps you'll get elected to high office. That would suit you, save for the fact you'll be further out of touch with reality than you already are.
Music absolutely has a color when the "N" word appears a dozen times during a three minute rant against women, police, and Caucasians. If you can't wrap your head around that, you'll be an ideal politician, much like George W. Bush, who tested well, by otherwise was as stupid as a box of rocks.
If you feel like arguing, and you obviously do, try learning how to actually quote somebody correctly, instead of the crap you're pumping out.
It comes off like you're talking to yourself. Meh, God knows, you probably are.
I have zero tolerance of males that feel it obligatory to enhance their perceived status by tagging self aggrandizing adjectives in front of their name. They always seem to come off as clowns, trying to subjugate other people by intimidation. "I'm BIG Mike! That sort of thing. Well big, spare me. So then wow, you're "Superpeter" zzzzzzzz. I'm fine. So go fly off and save a damsel in distress.
And as to my screen name, which I suppose could be construed as "self aggrandizing", it really isn't. It's just fair warning.

BTW: I grew up in inner city Miami NW 7th Ave in the mid 70's-80's having stray bullets miss me and hit friend's that would die in my arms as we waited for an ambulance.I vividly recall stray bullets coming through walls and the police taking too long to come until the violence died down. I fly back all the time (in a few weeks in fact) to visit my grandparents and make sure they are ok. They love all the southern rock bands you speak of and don't want to understand Hip-Hop(=Rap -minus- Lies)also. I think they believe it creates a shield from the foolishness outside. My first cd I ever paid for as a child was RUN DMC 'Raising Hell". Never looked back and I'm doing stellar. Matter of fact, the children after me became a Pulmonary Surgeon, the next child became a teacher and so on.
Your not qualified to assume how "in touch I am with the hood" :o) I understand your situation completely and I'm working to do something about it until i die.
Is your intent or effort anything more than negative, racial rants??
My like minded people and I, We work to heal this "dying tree" of a world and WE ALL LOVE HIP_HOP= *Rap minus lies* along with other great music.
Do you hear your own words about people like yourself?!?!?!

You're right about one thing we really shouldn't compare inner city experiences. Ours really don't seem to bear any resemblance to one another. Yours sounds like some ward heeler trying to get himself elected
Hip hop and rap are intended to appeal to youth audiences. Stylistically, I can bear them after perhaps they've been cleaned up for TV, so to speak. So, in passing, in a movie, they seem OK. Yet it really doesn't offset or excuse the the hard core vulgar component. Nothing excuses Kanye West's behaviour in relation to Taylor Swift at the Grammies either. (Just though I'd mention that). Can I use that one episode to justify all of my negative opinions about hip hop? Because that would only be fair now wouldn't it?
We had music that was intended to change the status of the world, preached revolution and tolerance, yet it never came anywhere close to the classlessness that exists in a certain segment of rap.
I don't really know where you get the idea that one good example disproves a broader truth. I guess you need that concept for motivation. Whatever gets you through the day.
Escaping the ghetto is indeed a difficult undertaking. Many delude themselves into thinking the NBA is the way out, and indeed it is, for a very select few.
Around here, when you need a place to stay, you kick the door in to one of the abandoned houses, and because you need a place to stay while you're dealing heroine, that makes it all right.
I don't really see the point of continuing this discussion, as it is quite pointless. Plus it will probably get pulled. All that typing for nothing, from both parties, seems a waste of time.
I understand what ROFLMAO off actually means. So by spelling it out, you're actually proving yourself to be the condescending clown that I think you are. GFY
I think we've had enough off topic posts and personal comments. Fair warning.
I have on several occasions asked for this thread and its discussion to remain on topic, as has Mailpup as well.
From now on I will be removing all offending posts without warning, and repercussions may well follow. You have all been warned.
I have turned people onto your site that would have infinite credible knowledge knowledge to add to these discussions but have been turned away because of the childish insults to people. I hope this problem gets fixed. Also Leader @Leaky?? How is @captiancranky able to add sentences to his just previously posted material. And i understand why we have we all been warned but why shy away from letting the main offender know?
I sincerely apologize for getting your attention but a good friend who is a business owner I turned onto your site voiced these concerns to me but felt he would be insulted in this arena which is foolish since he makes some of this stuff!!
I hope you understand @mailpup & @ Leeky
If you are unhappy with a post you read we have a report function specifically to avoid these sort of arguments and personal insults from happening. Resorting to personal flaming is not the answer. There are plenty of people resorting to such actions in this thread, and its frankly becoming childish and silly. Had comments been reported they could have been dealt with, without resorting to removing half the posts in this thread.
If you wish to question my actions or have something to say you are welcome to PM me where we can discuss the matter properly.
Lets put this in perspective though; this forum is considerably more friendly than many other forums out there. We seem to only run into trouble when people feel their egos are being stepped on, and thats something we'll never be able to avoid. I'd much rather let threads take their natural route and not intervene, but sometimes its just unavoidable.
You are welcome to PM me if you wish to continue discussing this Superpeter, but I have asked several times now to keep on topic and I kindly ask you to keep to that please, so lets leave it there, or take it to PM where you can voice your concerns freely.
