Weekend Open Forum: Your most outdated software?

By

On April 6, 2012, 6:50 PM

Software developers have a knack for shooting themselves in the foot. In the name of progress, they introduce irrelevant features, clunky interfaces and shady monetization schemes. Before you know it, your favorite program is a warped husk of its former self, so you cling to the version you love -- even if it's a little archaic. Such is the case with several TechSpot staffers.

For instance, Steve edits his awesome hardware review pictures with a 14-year-old copy of Paint Shop Pro, while I still fire up FrontPage 2003. It's not quite the same, but Shawn uses the old school Windows Classic theme on Windows 7, and he prefers individual IM clients such as AIM over something like Pidgin. What outdated software do you refuse to upgrade and why?

  1. The Windows Movie Maker that came with Vista. The new live one is more stable, but it still lacks a lot of functionality of the older versions

  2. Well I run Windows XP Pro on my home computer, and all the PC's at work. We have a ~2005 Mac G5. Latest version of MS Office we own is 2003 (although one of our other stores has a copy of 98 :P). Have to love MS Compatibility pack and OpenOffice. Have a copy of AutoCad 2004 Lite on one of the machines for converting DWG files to PDF for viewing and repeat printing. I know they have AutoDesk DWG True View 2012 for free, but I like the print dialog setup for Autocad 2004 better.

  3. Most of my favorite emulators for NES, SNES, Game Gear, etc haven't published updates isnce '04-'05.

  4. I don't know about my most outdated software but my most outdated hardware is xbox360

  5. Actually, I believe I still have a copy of Word 6.0 for Windows 3.1 floating around the room somewhere.

  6. SPF Professional for Windows, 1996. Emulates the ISPF Mainframe Editor from MVS. Best editor ever. Won't run in Windows 64 bit *sob*. Still, it works in a VM so life is still viable.

Heh. I still have a DOS 2 or DOS 3 period unopened WordStar someplace. No possible way to install it on anything, even if the floppy disks haven't all flaked away. It's just in a box that has somehow followed me around since shortly after the dinosaurs died. But hey, at the time somebody gave it to me I was already using the much more modern PC Write and doing everything in batch files. Go, me!

But I gotta say, Windows 7 and Linux are better.

  8. Gotta love Paint Shop Pro. On a similar note, I wish 3dFX was still around - they were without a doubt the kings of high performance graphics hardware in the 90's.

  9. I still use Lotus Notes R5 (2002) at home for my several mail accounts, still use MS Office 2000 and photoshop 7. I still use a DELL Dimension 4500 (bought in 2003 with XP Home (I replaced the hard drive, upgraded memory and reinstalled the OS in 2009)(keeping an Acronis image of my brand new XP to restore it one shot in the future).

waiting for someone to mention utorrent. oops, I just did!

Yea, sorry for the necro of this thread but that is really true.

I had a look at the latest µTorrent, what a bloated PoS it has become, loads of adware and crap it wants installed if you are not careful!

I've been a long time user of v2.0.4 but upgraded to v2.2.1 now and that is the version I'll continue to use.

There is a skin for it here that makes it look like v2.0.4 and by pressing F8 & F9 to turn off the apps and find pane it becomes very streamlined looking
