Drakan: Order of the Flame review

Gameplay
This is the area where Drakan is not unique at all. However, the third person style and going through caverns has not lost its appeal, but it has been done before. Luckily there are wide outdoor areas that not only give you great eye candy, but also expand upon the story.
When you are outside you can pick your next path you want to take. Being able to progress into different areas at a time is little limited in Drakan though. You may be able to fly off on your dragon to different areas, but the game is still linear. This may be good and bad. It makes it a whole lot easier to progress to the next part of the game. It does limit the replay value though. The later levels looked as though they were
rushed a bit through development.
The scenery looks a little rough and some visual artifacts are visible. The things I really like are the character interaction between Arokh and Rynn.
They way they spoke and behaved made it really seem that they were as one. Another thing about the gameplay that made me want to play more is the interesting story line that unfolds after completing areas. You will learn about what has happened to your people, your land, and eventually your brother.
The weapons in Drakan are implemented very well. You are able to store you weapons in a limited amount of space among your other supplies that you collected along the way. The weapons do not last forever though. They have a durability limit that can cause your blade to brake after a certain amount of uses. Blades such as axes and swords are very common, but you can also use bows and a wide variety of arrows. You will get more
powerful weapons as you progress though the game, just like most other games.
The computer controlled Wartoks really make the battles with them fun. You never know how they will react to your swings. You have to time your swings just right at just the right distance to make the most effective blow, but even then, they will still be able to block your attempt.
If you manage to cut off your enemy’s limbs, there are as good as dead, but you have to turn on the violence level to the max. Turning up the violence level actually makes the game easier because of the above stated.
Even though the multiplayer side of the game was a little weak, I still had fun in some game servers. Even on my 56K modem I was able to enjoy the multiplayer capabilities. I didn’t use Mplayer, but the games own server browser. I was only able to see 4 or 5 servers on the list at a time, which made playing very
limited. Hopefully, I will be able to see more servers and less lag once the official patch is released.
