Drakan: Order of the Flame review
Posted by Adam Klein on September 09, 1999

I heard a lot of hype about Drakan, so I decided to purchase it and give it a go. I was surprised with this game. The graphics set a nice mood for this long and appealing adventure game. After completing certain sections of the game, I felt drawn into the story so much; I wanted to see what the next scene had to offer. I rarely ever finish a game, but Drakan was the exception.

I have heard from a lot of people on how this game looks too much like Tomb Raider. I have to agree with them on this. I have seen the Tomb Raider games continue to be released, but they were all like the first version.

Drakan may appear to have stolen a lot of what made Tomb Raider a success, but Drakan is a lot more fun to play then any of them. Drakan allows players to use many weapons when they play, making the replay value higher.

The only thing I would have felt needed a major change was that the bugs should have been addressed before release. Still, the best “out of box” experience I had in the past six months was with Descent 3. Never has a game played so good without the aid of an endless stream of patches. Drakan, will hopefully be totally fixed with the soon to be released patch from Surreal.

Story

The game begins when a band of angry Wartok has burned the main character, Rynn’s village down. She then finds Atimar, the village priest, lay dying.

With his last words he tells Rynn that the Wortok have taken her brother, Delon. Rynn’s quest is to rescue here brother with the aid of a fellow dragon she meets her way. The dragon, Arokh was broken from stone and bound with Rynn to help her on her quest to free her people.

Being bound together means that when one feels pain the other does as well. Rynn also learns about The Order of the Flame, which was formed long ago to bring man and dragon together and to bring peace among all the warring creatures in the land of Drakan.

Rynn must save her people and also save her brother, but also bring back the Order of the Flame.
