I really liked the first FreeSpace game, actually I found the game to be very appealing to me specially its story line. The graphics were also superb, but that wouldn’t do much without a good story to go along with those pretty graphics. When I finished the original FreeSpace I had this sensation that I wanted even more.

I was happy to hear that there was a sequel to FreeSpace planned and now that it is out, I’m happy to say that FreeSpace 2 gave me as much enjoyment as the original did.

I was drawn into the story line much like the original did and the graphics looked very clean, sharp and now have a higher resolution. If you remember, the original game was limited to only 640x480x16. FreeSpace 2 allows me to play at 1024x768x32. It makes seeing distant fighters a whole lot easier. The story line in FreeSpace 2, in my opinion, is even better than the story line in the original game, it takes unexpected twists and turns that will push you to go even further to see what the outcome will be.

System Requirements

In my experience with the game, I did not notice any slow downs of any sort; but then again my system is running pretty fast. Here are the requirements for the game if you are interested in this game and you are unsure if your system will run it good.

Pentium 200Mhz
32 Mb RAM
Win 95/98/NT
3D Graphics Accelerator (supports Glide or D3D)
250Mb Hard Drive Space
8X or faster CD-ROM Drive
Direct Sound compliant sound card
100% Microsoft-compatible mouse (joystick recommended)
Multiplayer: 8 player TCP/IP over LAN or Internet

Story

Like I said before, FreeSpace 2 takes place 32 years after The Great War. If you haven’t played the original game, The Great War involved a race of beings called the Shivans and two other beings called the Vasudans and of course the human race.

The Vasudans and the Humans were at war with each other at the time that the Shivan armada invaded space. Once the Shivans made themselves known that they wanted to destroy both the Humans and the Vesudans and claim their space, the Vesudans and Humans decided to join forces to bring an end to the Shivans.

The Shivans brought massive firepower and technology beyond what the Vasudans and Humans had. During this battle of The Great War, the Humans and the Vasudans acquired the technology that the Shivans had and fought back with this technology to bring the Shivans under. The Humans and Vasudans did not destroy the Shivans totally, but pushed them back far enough that they would not come back, until now.
