Sea Dogs
is a 3D role-playing game set in the age of sail, where pirates & the
empires of France, Spain, & England clash for control of the Archipelago.
Players will follow the exploits of Nicolas, a young merchant captain whose
recent escape from the clutches of Spain finds him in the unfamiliar islands of
the these warring powers. From there you're free to choose your side or sail for
yourself, follow quests, gain allies, plunder ships & duel rival captains.
This all
sounds well & great so far doesn’t it ? A game to come to the PC that
comes from a fairly under utilized genre. Read on & see if it’s any good
after all.
Installation
& Manual
The game
Manual is quite sufficient & explains everything you'll need to know to play
the game & it gives some background information on the game also. After
installing the game i immediately applied the latest patch, version 1.04 - Available
from Bethsoft.
Story
The
story of the is pretty much like the Introductory paragraph above, however the
story after this point it's wide open. The game has no set storyline as
such, you
do what you want to do & when or if you want to do it.
You want to become a wealthy merchant ? No problem. You want to be a feared
pirate ? Again, no problem. The story can develop along with the path you decide
to take & those whom you talk to. It's also worth nothing that such
career changes can occur pretty much whenever you wish, e.g. While you will most
likely initially be working for the English, later on in the game you have the
opportunity to change allegiance to the Spanish, or French, & the Pirate route
is always available too.
Overall
the storyline is fairly interesting but leaves a lot to chance in a ways. This
can be a good thing or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Personally I feel it’s a
bit annoying in that sense that you’ll probably end up playing the game sometimes with no sense of direction until by chance
you talk to a character on one of the islands that tells you what to do next, or
in some cases hints it.
