After several years under development, Unreal is out and it´s safe to say
that it was worth the wait. Unreal is an evolutionary step in the single-player arena
and I can say this game is a must have for any 3D shooter fan as I am.
The Unreal story very simple. You´re an interplanetary criminal sent to an off-world
penal colony but the ship that was taking you there is caught in a horrible planet.
As the survivor your goal is to get out of the ship and the planet.
UNREAL BEGINS
You escape from your cell, you start with no weapons and with just 12 healthes,
the first thing you pick up is an universal translator that is intended to translate
the strange Skaarj writing and let you read personal logs from fallen soldiers.
After walking through some rooms you´ll feel impressed by the gorgeous graphical effects
Unreal´s got like colored lightning, dynamic lightning and floor reflections.
Then when you try to make your way through a door, the only option available, it
doesn´t open and you start to hear how a person is being massacred in the other side
of the door, when the door opens, you´ll see a how a person is turned to pieces, that´s
the first time you see a Skaarj, you´re in front of him, without any weapon, but he
doesn´t attacks you but run out of the room through a corridor where you´ll find the
first weapon, if you are fast maybe you could shoot him but when he turns right and
you arrive there you´ll find that he´s dissapeared and you start feeling afraid and in a
sole atmosphere, things like this make Unreal the best 3D shooter available.
Also it´s you should notice the tremendous AI difference between Quake II where a soldier
stupidly run straight to you and Unreal where a Skaarj can strafe, duck and even
they can look for help if they´re losing a battle. Notice that Unreal´s artificial
intelligence was coded by the author of the Quake reaper bot.
Although Half- Life which release is very soon, is supposed to have a revolutionary AI.
