Now select the Advanced tab. As per the Security
tab, certain options listed will only be available if you
have the Microsoft Java VM &/or Sun Microsystems JRE &/or
Windows XP installed.
Accessibility & Browsing
Always expand ALT text for images. You can ignore this setting if Show pictures
is Selected (See Multimedia section). If that setting
is Unselected then Selecting this setting can
have the effect of increasing the image size for any ALT
text.
Move system caret with focus/selection changes.
This setting is only really needed if you are using
Accessibility Aids. If you use such Aids then Select
this setting, otherwise leave it Unselected.
Always send URLs as UTF-8. Selecting this setting will enable you to
use URL’s containing characters from foreign language.
Unselect this setting to disable this feature.
There’s no real need to disable this feature at all.
Automatically check for Internet Explorer updates.
If you Select this setting IE6 will check for the
availability of an updated version of IE6 for download & if
detected you will have the option to download it. I’d
recommend leaving this Unselected unless you rarely
check your system for updateable components (Use
OS Updates ;)). Note – This will not detect updates such
as security patches, rather Service Pack Releases.
Close unused folders in History & Favorites.
When Selected IE6 will automatically close any opened
Favorites or History folders when you open a new one.
Unselect this setting to disable this setting,
this way such folders will only close when you decide to
close them.
Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer/Other).
Select this setting to disable the installed
Script debugger. This would be the recommend setting for
most users. Only those testing out webpages/scripts they
have in their website should Unselect this setting,
to enable to the installed Script debugger for
troubleshooting purposes.
Display a notification about every script error.
Unselect this setting to disable notification
of script errors in webpages. This would be the recommended
setting for most users. Only those testing out webpages/scripts
they have in their website should Select this setting
to enable this feature for troubleshooting purposes.
Enable folder view for FTP sites. This setting controls how IE6 displays FTP folders. When
Selected FTP folders are navigated in a similar
fashion to that of Windows Explorer. When Unselected
folders are displayed in html style. That said if you do a
lot of FTP browsing then don’t bother with IE6 get a real
FTP Client instead, e.g.
Smart FTP.
Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer).
Selecting this setting will enable IE6 to
download any components necessary to view a webpage, e.g. a
Language pack or Shockwave. You will be prompted for
permission to download the component. Unselecting
this setting will disable Install On Demand, which
could potentially cause problems viewing certain webpages if
you don’t have the necessary components installed.
Enable Install On Demand (Other). Selecting this setting will enable the
installation of other components necessary to view a
webpage, e.g. Windows Media Player for viewing streaming
content. You will be prompted for permission to download the
component. Unselecting this setting will disable
Install On-Demand, which could cause problems viewing
certain content if you don’t have the necessary components
installed.
Enable offline items to be synchronized on a schedule.
Assuming you have offline items synchronized to be
downloaded/updated according to a schedule you have setup
(Click on Start, Programs, Accessories,
Synchronize) then you should Select this
setting. If you have no items synchronized then you may as
well leave it Unselected.
Enable page transitions. When Selected IE6 will fade out of, & into a webpage you are
loading. I’d recommend Unselecting this setting as it
serves no real useful purpose.
Enable Personalized Favorites Menu. Select this setting to enable the use of a
Personalised favourites menu. When enabled the most
recently visited Websites on your Favourites menu are
visible, while others aren’t displayed unless you click/rest
the mouse cursor over the down arrow. Here’s what my
favourites menu initially appears like with this feature
enabled.

Personally I find this unnecessarily inconvenient and I’d
recommend Unselecting this setting to disable
this feature, although it may be useful for those with a
large amount of Favorites, in which case you should probably
separate your links into different folders on the Favorites
menu.
Enable third-party browser extensions. Selecting this setting will enable
use of 3rd party, non-Microsoft, browser
extensions in IE6. These can vary in what they do, e.g. the
Google toolbar for
searching the Internet. Unselecting this option is
recommended for those wanting to maximize IE6 stability by
disabling the use of these extensions.
Enable visual styles on buttons & controls in web pages. Set this to your own preference.
Force offscreen compositing even under Terminal Server.
Compositing is the process of combining 2 images to form
a new image. The most common compositing operation is an
over, where 1 image is placed over another. Compositing
effects can cause flashing when running IE under Terminal
Server. When Selected compositing is enabled
which should remove the flashing affect. This may adversely
affect performance under Terminal Server; as such it is
recommended you Unselect this option if you are
running Terminal Server. Microsoft has a
webpage that displays
compositing in effect.
Notify when downloads complete. When Selected an IE6 download will display that the
download is complete, along with time taken and average
download speed. When Unselected finished downloads
will automatically close. This setting is also available
when you download a file via IE6 as shown below.

You can Select/Unselect the setting here also,
with the same effect as setting it in Internet Options. I’d
recommend Selecting this as it is a useful way to
gauge your Internet connections speed.
Reuse windows for launching shortcuts. When Selected the current, i.e. last one
viewed, IE6 window will be used for launching hyperlinks to
a website. E.g. If you click a hyperlink in an OE email, the
website will load in the last IE6 windows you viewed, or
launch a new one if none are open. When Unselected a
new IE6 window will be opened.
Show friendly HTTP error messages. When Selected IE6 will display more detailed
description of any errors (and potential solutions) when you
have failed to connect to a website. E.g. the shot below is
that of a Friendly error message displayed, and potential
solutions, when I failed to connect to a website;

When Unselected IE6 will simply display an error code
and the name of the error. I’d recommend leaving this
Selected.
Show friendly URLs. When Selected this will let IE6 display more readable links in
the Left of IE6’s status bar, e.g. Shortcut to
guides.shtml at www.techspot.com as opposed to
www.techspot.com/guides.shtml when this setting in
Unselected. Personally I find this setting of no real
use whatsoever, leave it Unselected.
