No One Lives Forever Tweak Guide

No One Lives Forever (From here on in - NOLF) is a highly acclaimed game from Monolith, who would have thought such a game came from the same guys who made Blood 2. Despite Blood 2, Monolith are now back & have shown us they can make a good game that isn’t full of bugs. Still, NOLF is not without it’s problems. It’s extremely resource intensive & will make most systems crawl. But there’s hope for you still & that’s what you´re reading now.

This guide has been prepared on Windows 2000 & Millennium Edition with the latest 1.002 patch installed. Now, on with the NOLF tweak guide.

Troubleshooting

Patch it; get the latest patch for NOLF, currently that is the 1.002 available here. While you are there you should also download the 2 Official Map Packs if you intend to play NOLF Multiplayer. This latest patch contains a vast amount of bug fixes & optimizations over the initial release version.

Install DirectX 8.0A on your system if not already installed.

Drivers, it is essential to get the latest drivers for you video card & sound card. You can find links to many hardware manufacturers on our Drivers page. This can solve display or audio problems you may have encountered in the game.

If you experience static noise or irregular audio playback, try the following (assuming that installing the latest drivers don’t fix the problems):

  1. Click on Start, Settings, then Control Panel. If you have Windows 2000 or Millennium Edition installed note the icon names as shown in brackets below.

  2. Open the Multimedia (Sounds & Multimedia) icon.

  3. Select the Audio tab & then hit the Advanced Properties (Advanced) button.

  4. Select the Performance tab.

  5. Move the Hardware acceleration slider to the 2nd notch from the left (Basic Acceleration). Move the Sample rate conversion quality slider to the middle notch (Improved sample rate converter).

If you are having problems running the game (Performance or otherwise) on Windows 2000 then try checking our Windows 2000 Compatibility & Performance guide.

Should you find the game displaying corrupted textures try disabling S3TC texture compression support (Assuming your graphics card supported it that is). Add the following setting into the Command-Line field of the Advanced Options menu (Mentioned later) +S3TCEnable 0. This will reduce game performance in many cases however.

Overclocking, NOLF can be sensitive to overclocking, if your system is overclocked & you have problems running NOLF, e.g. lockups during the game, try restoring the system or graphics card to its default speed, or applying more cooling.
