Command & Conquer: Renegade tweak guide

Command & Conquer: Renegade represents Westwood’s first foray into setting a FPS game in the C&C universe on the PC & has been met with a mixed enough response. This guide will take you through setting up the Game, along with other informational tips regarding Graphics Cards supported in the Game.

Troubleshooting

Begin by downloading the latest patch for C&C: Renegade; this may resolve many of the bugs or other problems you may have encountered. You can find the latest patches for the Game at Westwood's official website (Or using the Renegade Auto Update feature alternatively).

Now download the latest Drivers for your Graphics card & Soundcard. This may solve (most) Display or Audio problems you might be having. There are links to various manufacturers on the Drivers page. Install DirectX 8.1 on your system if you haven’t done so yet. This may also fix problems with Graphics, Sound & Input devices.

If you experience any lockups & such they might be caused by overclocking, if so try lowering the Memory/Core speed of the overclocked device. Still having problem? Check the EA Technical Support.

Graphics

As regards Graphics card support in Renegade there are a few things worth noting. The first being that Renegade supports N-Patches (Truform) available with latest ATI Radeon Graphics cards, e.g. 8500 for increased polygon counts in Models. Support for this will be auto-detected by the Game itself & should give improved visual quality as compared to other Graphics cards.

The second thing to note is that the Game will automatically disable DXT1 support with NVIDIA Graphics cards, assumedly to maintain texture quality given how poor NVIDIA’s DXT1 implementation is, though I’ve yet to receive a response from EA Technical Support about this (Having emailed several weeks ago I doubt I ever will). For full details about this please see this thread on the matter in our Forums. The net effect of this will be that of slightly reduced performance as compared to had DXT1 support being enabled, though DXT2 –5 remain enabled as expected.

Click on Start, Programs, Westwood, Renegade, Renegade Config & select the Video tab.

Driver. This section is only really of use if you have multiple Graphics cards installed. If so just select the one you wish to use to render the Game with here, e.g. if you have a Voodoo 3 & Kyro 2 installed then you’d (probably) want to use the Kyro 2.

Resolution. Selecting a lower resolution can improve performance & maintain a stabler, higher frame rate. Higher resolutions look better (sharper & smaller jagged edges), they also tend to run slower. This all depends on how slow/fast your system (Particularly Graphics card) is of course. 1024 x 768 would be ideal in C&C: Renegade for the majority of users.

Color Depth. Set this to 16 bit for best performance, but reduced visual quality (More apparent color banding). Select 32 bit for best visual quality (Less apparent banding), although performance will be reduced – especially on older Graphics cards. Using a 32-bit colour depth will also reduce rendering errors as it uses a higher Z-Buffer precision for performing depth calculations. Those with Kyro Graphics cards should set to 32 bit given the negligible performance difference over 16 bit as compared to other Graphics cards.

Windowed Mode. Tick this option to enable C&C: Renegade to be played in a window on your desktop rather than in Full-screen mode. You’d be best off leaving this Unticked.
