15 Titles Every PC Gamer Should Own

Acknowledging we wouldn't be able to please everyone, we still went ahead with this feature idea of must-have/play PC classics as we came to a consensus internally of games we all loved from the past 25+ years.

That was the process before we cut the list down to fewer games to make it a condensed read. Perhaps that wasn't the brighest idea and we realize we missed the mark on representing the RTS genre properly.

We have reacted to your feedback by addressing some of these holes based on the games we had already considered for the list but did not make it on the original piece. You will see CoH added to the main list and many others added as Classics/Honorable mentions.

Would feel a lot more like 'our' list here at TS if you created a series of polls for the community to vote as a means to build the list. Could be quite involved, but the end result would be worthwhile imho.

the article is just a pretentious way to say "these are my favorite 15 games, they should be yours too!"

No, but your post is just a pretentious way to say "this my whiny unimportant opinion, and should be yours too!"
The author clearly states "with the help of feedback from our readers and staff members" And if personal opinions make you so bitchy then make your own damn list.

My God all these little crybabies are just so pitiful.

What pcnthuziast said; having an article with a link to the appropriate forum, or a full front page article for it.
But then you could go and make this into a full multi-layer article (with separate sections for genres?). Could be quite fun, but a lot of work. I'd start, at the least, with a base list and ask for suggestions for what would be voted on...

Otherwise, besides the title making this article seem less opinion than it was (I didn't see it that way), I'm fine with articles like this. At the least for me, it reminds me of forgotten games lol

The article is an opinion piece. Not the 11th commandment.
Articles like this always trigger a comments explosion by everyone insisting that the list is wrong and that their list is better.

I'd like to see a list of games that newer gamers (teenagers) should play to see how much fun a real game can be, instead of a boring-but-pretty 4-hour online clickfest where you get to hurl abuse at strangers, which modern games are evolving into. Let's educate the youth of today on what "real" games were like and the standards we expect from game developers.

"everybody chill" - Arnold as Mr. Freeze

The correct answer was Civ 4 was the pinnacle of the series but frankly all of them are good :)

I'll have to try out Disco Elysium

I came to this article after reading the title feeling much the same way everyone else in the comments. But then I read the first three paragraphs. I now feel no one else in the comments bothered to read the first three paragraphs.

"...we're bringing you a breakdown of the top 15 recommended titles ... you guys loved and thought PC gamers should really check out..."

I have been playing on the PC for 20 years, and I have no interest on half the games on this list.
Also, a lot of the games that I do like, are not on this list.
And I think that a lot of PC gamers will feel the same.
So why would you make an article clamming that every PC gamer should own games they don't care about? Probably because this article was written by a self centred person, that can't understand that PC gamming is so wide in genres, that a lot of people play different games.

Re-read the first part of the article. It is an opinion piece and not a news article. I've quoted the important part for you below. Obviously some would disagree with this list. I did, but how does their opinion make them 'self centered'? I guess since you have a different opinion and made it public in the comment, you are 'self centered' for writing it. Sheesh...

"With the help of feedback from our readers and staff members, we're bringing you our breakdown of the top 15 titles (new and old) that WE FEEL every PC gamer should have in their digital library, in no particular order, here they are..."

Now that's the kind of loving we all need ?

Everyone will have their own preferences for a list like this, and it does not make anyone less of a gamer if they do not have any of the titles on this list.

I like reading about what other people like in PC gaming, but I hate reading the comments because people always bash them. Even in articles like this where it says it's subjective, it gets bashed. No one bothers to try to get along, or even read. Just hate. This is what console gaming was always like to me, and why I always avoided it. Doesn't matter where you go now.

I've been playing games for more than 30 years. I've played all but three of these. Loved all the ones I played. Some of them I still play, or replay, and I play others that I love that aren't here, but I loved reading the list anyway, so thank you.

Ya sure got a hit out off my 15 fav games list. Man! How many times has that been done? Why not ? If ya find something that works stick with it. There are parts of games that are memorable for me and it goes beyond 15. If you want to really do something original do 10 parts of games that were spectacular. I will give you one: In Half-Life 2 when ya had to cross that bridge...remember? Things like that are less "done before"

Listing them by genre (FPS, RTS, SIMs, etc) would have eliminated 80&% of the negative comments .

Or maybe not.

Speaking of which....hey, where are Fallout, the Bioshock sequels, COD WW2 and 3, Dishonored,, Descent?? I need a cookie.

While I can agree with most of the list there are a crap ton of games missing.
Deus Ex the original was more ambitious for the time where as mankind divided played it safe and was a buggy mess.

Torment Planescape was the Pinnacle of D&D trpgs or srpg tactical or strategic is correct, crpg isn't a thing stop pegging games in a fiction catagory journalists just made up and shows the nuevo heritage in gaming.

Descent?
Turok Dinosaur Hunter? You would have had Halo without it.
Duke Nukem 3D?
Quake?
Unreal tournament?
Soul Reaver?
Hitman Agent 47?
Wolfenstein 3d?
Disciples 2?
AnachronX?
Diablo 1+2?
Blood?
Red Faction?
American McGee Alice?
Strife?
MechWarrior?
Painkiller?
Gothic?
Tomb Raider?
Return to castle Wolfenstein?
Dark Messiah M&M
System Shock?
Flight Simulator?
Need for Speed?
Test Drive?
Worms Armageddon?
Omikron Nomad Soul?
Shadowgate?
Shadow run?
...ext ECT
Literally can keep going forever of titles you should have played or owned on PC over the years.

I have played two of these. Also started skyrim but got bored quickly. I am the guy who sees random unfinished games in survival genre and sinks thousands of hours inventing his own game in the game.

I have a few of them (WoW, Witcher3,...) but tbh I found a few franchises, or should I say, a representative game of a few franchises missing, let's say three.
May be the age of the current gamers and reviewers find it hard to remember many pre-2010 games ;-) but for somewhat older people, they'll remember that they were massively popular and good:
1 - one game from Sierra games, be it a King's Quest or Leisure Suit Larry or Quest for Glory.
2 - one game from the X-Wing series from Lucas Arts. In general, there are no space simulators or game represented (like EVE or Homeworld... omg, Homeworld...from Relic/Sierra btw)
3 - one game from the Might and Magic series. I'd go with one Heroes of Might and Magic but that's me that bought them all :)

I have fond memories of the "Commander Keen" series. I had lots of fun playing that though I have not played it in years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_Keen IIRC, it was Id's first video game release and definitely came out before the original Wolfenstein 3D.

In either the original Wolfenstein 3D or one of the early Doom games, there is a secret room where Commander Keen is hanging from a noose.

For anyone interested, it looks like Steam has the entire series - https://store.steampowered.com/app/9180/Commander_Keen/

And it looks like it can be downloaded here for free - http://www.commander-keen.com/

Seen several comments here saying "why are there no RTS. CoH missing!" One of these comments got 8 likes.

Did anyone actually read it? CoH is in the list and Starcraft 2 in the honorable mentions.

Except for LoL, I think this is pretty damn solid list.
