1920x1080 resolution is squared

ok...i have an older computer from 2001 but i have aftermarket video card in it and i just bought me a 1080p TV, i hooked up my PC to my TV through the VGA cord and set my pc to 1920x1080 but the resolution is squared instead of being widescreen its squared and i have to move my mouse across the screen to see the rest of my desktop i have a ATI Radeon 9550 vid card. I dont know if theres a setting where i can make the resolution full widescreen instead of it being 4:9 and having to scroll to the sides with my mouse to see my desktop

check in your TV for the 'display scaling' or 'picture size' option. leave it to disabled or OFF or native.

-edit: it seems like your TV does not support 1920x1080. have you tried lower resolution such as 1280x720?
