Nowhere on the packaging of the physical game states you are not getting the full product at purchase. Legally based on the packaging you can't agree with unknown terms and conditions.

That's the part that needs to be clearly disclosed.

I don't like this practice whatsoever but if you look at the blog post I linked, on the package for the Xbox game my girlfriend bought, it clearly states in two places that an Internet connection is required to install the game. Again, I agree that's total BS but at least where I am in Canada, it is very clearly disclosed.

The license agreements are based on the DMCA. How would I change it? That when you hit "buy" you own an unrevokalbe license where the terms of service cannot be changed after the purchase. words exists for these types of deals already like "rent" or "lease". They intentionally deceive consumers and then hide behind the law like what you're doing. Hardly anyone benefits for this and overall makes the world a sworse place. The really kicker is that they're using legislation to make rules for a world they couldn't have dreamed existed when it was drafted

But then we have people like you who are defending it even though that these laws don't improve your life at all and generally make it worse. And what do you gain from defending it? How does keeping the laws in place that enable these companies to sell you a license make your life better?

Aside from they do improve lives because patent and copyright laws breed innovation and competition.

Also if sleeping software isn’t profitable no one would do it, licensing and DRM prevents mass theft of software.

This is old news. A physical disc hasn't been more than just a physical license key for about a decade at this point, if not longer.

The fact pirated versions of modern games will end up working for much longer than legally purchased copies should really be a wake up call to everyone that something is deeply wrong.

No it’s required to protect software from piracy. There used to be no DRM, then piracy became a thing and activation keys started and then pirates started spoofing those so more DRM had to be implemented. The only only punishing legitimate consumers are those who can’t restrain themselves from being dicks, as per usual.

And... That's exactly why it needs to change. Even if you want to use semantics like "it's not the dictate itself, it is a license to use it", the company must provide a way a physical media or a full download mode, with which all can use the software without a server/internet connection perpetually. If the license is for limited time (like one year) only, then it doesn't need.

Reality check: DRM and anticheat can still be used for online gaming, and you can still offer an offline mode. Basically it's the equivalent of people can't have freedom and go outside, because crime is higher with free people than with people being watched at home 24/7. All that in behalf of money.

It's there equivalent of: we shouldn't have Blu-ray, music CDs, etc because there is more piracy and everything should need a server connection each time to really check if I bought it. If the company shuts down the server, what I paid for won't work. "It's a license"

It may be the US sure of things, but certainly not the world's side of thing. I will keep fighting against DRM protected stuff and server based licenses. That from a person that has over 300 games between Steam and GOG. But gog is the way to go.

DRM isn’t just for online games

Blu rays literally have DRM and you only own a licence with the Blu ray.

DRM and copyright law is stronger in the UK than the US. It’s illegal to rip CDs in the UK

When you buy the CD, you own a physical disk. You do not own music, only a license to play it at home, car, for you, family or friends. You can not play it for a larger public in open space, shops and so on. You can sell the physical CD though, and that would be the only difference.

The "only" difference? With a CD
- I can backup it
- I can playback music as many times, devices, years as I want
- I need no internet nor validation service / independent from a server
- I can trade, loan or sell it

That's a big difference.
