What kind of certification would really matter in the industry?

Programming jobs go to even the most unqualified people (those who finished a literature degree, for instance). That's the situation in mostly outsourcing countries.

I, for one, would only hire people with a degree in computer science. Microsoft, for instance, interviews the logic of the candidate more than what studies he had or what certifications he managed to buy.
