Amazon raises minimum wage to $15 for all including temporary and seasonal employees

I was going to say something "smart alec" like but I see no negativity in this. Especially for how many people hate on Amazon. This is a good thing. It could be worse, we could be talking about a "living wage".
All that money has to come from SOMEWHERE.

Corporate profits are at the highest they have been in history, yet wages have barely gone up.

The money will come from the greedy companies who would rather buy back stock than pay their employees a living wage. TADA, money found.

Oh, I was under the impression we were discussing a rate increase on the federal level? I agree that localized increases aren't going to have as far reaching of an affect as a federal rate increase.

And money doesn't just materialize from no where. The wage increase has to come from somewhere. So increasing the rate doesn't actually keep more money in my pocket. I'm now paying my "taxes and subsidies for the poor" up front. In the end, we as a country are spending more for the same thing.

It's hard to argue such broad strokes for an argument to the point that you can say that about price increases from pretty much ANYTHING. Goods and wages have gone up before without your idea of catastrophic economic consequences. Yes the cost needs to be made up somewhere. You are basically describing our mixed economy and how it works. Like I said before if you have to pay another $0.25 for your burger or $10 more for your HDTV so be it. I'd argue Tariffs have a more immediate effect than any wage increases and yet we survive.

This a favorite answer - get the money from the rich, greedy corporations.

The problem is, when you pass a minimum wage law you pass it for everyone and the majority of people in this country don't work for a rich corporation making record profits.

And here's the irony - the small businesses can't handle the increases in labor costs, but the big corporations CAN. So a local hardware store (for example) can't raise their prices to cover their costs because Home Depot can afford to keep them low. The end result is the small business goes out of business or lays people off. To be fair - this isn't bad for the workers - they can go work at Home Depot. But if you don't like big corporations, you shouldn't be so quick to promote ideas that cost everyone money.

Another issue that exists with fast-food places (where many of these minimum wage jobs exist) is that they use the franchise model. Meaning - every McDonalds isn't owned by McDonalds - it's owned by a local person or small company and they just pay fees to McDonalds. This means that a single store doing poorly can't be held up by the profits in another city - they're owned by different people.

I'm not saying every corporation needs to boost their pay to $15 an hour. Even if it was $10 an hour, that would still be a pretty big jump for the working poor / low income people. Walmart and Amazon are the two largest private employers in the US, so any boost in income to those people would no doubt cause a ripple effect.

Amazon employees deserve at least $15 for the work they do. The working environment at Amazon fulfillment centers is pretty disgusting.

Berkeley Calif implemented the $15.00 hr thing a few years back but quickly scrapped it due to not being able to afford it .

Some real Einsteins out there lol.

Come on $15 that's cheap it should be $25 a week $1,000 after taxes for a single person your looking $920 back. Amazon has the money just like Google and the rest of them. Cost of living is so high here. Gas, Milk, Bread, Egg, Bills, E-Pass ouch.. Taxes, Fees.. Going to the movies is so expensive. I get a discount yet it still cost me $30 with GF without the discount it would $60. Add anyone else forget!

People should get paid fair for work. I don’t know good how much is $15 so I can’t say if fair.
