Anthropic CEO warns AI botnet swarms could soon take over the internet as Musk and Altman back slowdown

A hot potato: Once again, a warning about AI development resulting in a catastrophe has come from one of the people building these models. Anthropic boss Dario Amodei says that an AI-powered botnet swarm could take over the entire internet, and this scenario could become a reality in just six to twelve months. The CEO has also called for a slowdown in the developement of new AI models.

Amodei wrote his warning in a lengthy open letter. He said his theoretical botnet swarm could be here in under a year because of the accelerating rate of AI capability development.

Amodei said this botnet could cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage, and that the scale of damage would continue to increase from there if AI becomes more powerful without the necessary guardrails.

The CEO adds that the idea of pausing or slowing AI has been floated as far back as 2023, but he believes it made little sense back then. Now, Amodei says slowing down development could bring an extra year or two before models reach critical levels of capability, giving companies more time to advance alignment and reduce the risk that something goes seriously wrong.

Amodei's warning comes at a time when fears over AI are reaching a peak. Following the multiple incidents of agents going rogue, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned that the AI race could end in human extinction.

Amodei's call to slow the pace of AI development is being backed by both Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. "I've been sounding the alarm on AI for a long time," Musk said, highlighting a 2014 post in which he said: "We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes."

"I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier," Altman said. "Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon."

Evan Hubinger, an alignment science lead at Anthropic, added his voice to the debate. He agreed with Coxon's assessment and said there was more than a 10% chance of AI wiping out all humans in the next decade.

Beyond the digital dangers, it was recently reported that an Iran-linked group used Anthropic's Claude to assist with military reconnaissance and generate targeting recommendations for US naval forces in the Middle East. It was also discovered that Houthi rebels used Claude Code to code ballistic missile guidance systems.

Anthropic also said it identified possible attempts by suspected state-sponsored researchers to exploit its Claude AI model to develop biological weapons. The users were locked out after repeated attempts triggered Claude's built-in safety protocols.

The concerns over these incidents and the race toward developing superintelligence have seen Senator Bernie Sanders propose the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act. If it became law, those who violate its terms could face up to 20 years in prison: a similar punishment to the penalty for unlawfully developing nuclear weapons.

Calling for a slowdown in the development of AI isn't very helpful if nobody does it. Companies worry that if they slow their pace and others don't, they'll get left behind. Similarly, countries say that they won't be able to compete with rivals if limits are placed on development. Not that any of this will matter if we're all dead, of course.

AI is a fake market and the "slow down" is just them trying to justify the fact that they aren't making money and the next year everyone is about to have to start paying those loans off

The US wanted to be the only one with AI, we spent the most on AI, but all the other countries that are building massive datacenters aren't fear mongering the AI, only the companies carrying massive debt balances. Really makes you wonder.....

The scaling curve is flattening; costs for each new model are increasing, the gap between models is narrowing, training data is now a constraint as the internet has been scraped. How do we spin this to the markets?

The bull$hit tsunami from Dario is becoming truly ridiculous.

If he really believes what Anthropic is doing is dangerous, he could simply stop it - without open letters or any other fearmongering nonsense.

They are right though..already we’re facing a situation where around 50% of the users on certain popular social media platforms are bots.
It’s already being the used to swing elections.
Problem is, at this point it’s more a matter of «is there enough processing power to affect the internet stability», the answer to that is «not currently». If they build datacenters on the scale they are proposing however..it’s going to be hard to stop a botnet backed by 100 000 gpu’s to not being able to brute force its way into any / all institutions….so «that» is what should slow down..but with the amount of companies that would go bankrupt if they did, it’s very unlikely that will happen

Tech CEOs in 2024: AI will cure disease and unlock unimaginable prosperity.
Tech CEOs in 2026: We may have six months before the bot swarm eats the internet.
Actually Dario was already radiating doom and gloom nonsense in all directions in 2024.
As for curing disease, it's already happening. There are personalized cancer treatments developed with AI in clinical trials already, with a fast growing number of many more pending to enter clinical trials.

"this scenario could become a reality in X months" is something I've heard thousands of times in regard to all sorts of imaginary 'threats' (e.g. 'climate change') but shockingly none of the doom and gloom prophecies ever materialized.

When someone is trying to scare you with imaginary disaster scenarios, there's always a ulterior motive. In this particular case the ulterior motive is pretty obvious - regulatory capture. If Dario were sincere, he should have simply stopped Anthropic unilaterally, and then write open letters.

Exactly, he just wants to pull the wool over the eyes of regulators, and ideally with rules that suit him / OpenAI so he can bake in a duopoly or similar with the excuse of "oh but if not AI might destroy the planet", handily not mentioning a lot of it is spun up nonsense and also a great way to keep investment on board (something along the lines of "this might take over the world, you better support it man") in the same way OpenAI keeps rabbiting on about "AGI" and how they have supposedly achieved it for the 9th time in a row, and how their models are definitely "smarter" (including examples of it "solving" a maths problem where the model just seems to have stolen findings in effect)

The fact that Altman is agreeing with Amodei and appearing to be all altruistic, banging on about safety and so on all of a sudden should be a clear sign of an ulterior motive, since ultimately if they really are scared of these models and what they could do, they could just limit themselves?

Its not like you have an AI model provider round every corner that could start acting malicious, the sole point is China, and we know that is a thorn in the side of Amodei and Altman since it risks their megabucks and for everyone else involved in the supply chain to them for datacentres and all, so them asking for regulation is laughable and just trying to create a walled garden that fits them and their attempts to keep raking in the cash of investors at a wild rate

Call me a cynic, but I don't believe these people are doing anything but hedge their investment by putting a pause on things while they convince investors to give them more money.

The fact that ISIL is using AI to improve their bombs and attack strategies is more worrying to me than the idea that AI will cause the extinction of humanity. To be honest, humanity is going to extinct itself if it doesn't start cleaning up their climate and environment messes. And I worry that bad humans, I.e. ISIL and others, will corrupt AI so then maybe it becomes more dangerous. But AI all by itself isn't physically capable of destroying humans. That takes human intervention to accomplish.
