Apple has acquired LuxVue Technology, a Santa Clara, California-based startup working on micro-LED screen technologies, according to a TechCrunch report. Apple confirmed the acquisition with the usual generic statement:

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans".

There isn't much known about LuxVue apart from the fact that the company develops next-generation, low-power, micro-LED-based displays for consumer electronics. As per the report, the iPhone maker acquired the company to beef up its own hardware innovations area.

LuxVue has already filed several patents on micro-LED technology, something which Apple could integrate into its mobile devices for better battery life and screen brightness.

As far as investments are concerned, the startup had attracted $43 million in funding from Kleiner Perkins, iD Ventures America, and others. The company's last funding round, a series C, was for $25 million in December last year.

John Doerr, partner at Kleiner Perkins, said last year that the startup's technology will be a game changer, as it will improve battery power by 300% compared to the usual 1-2% improvements that we normally see in the industry. The Silicon Valley venture capital firm now lists LuxVue on its website as “acquired”.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook noted in last month’s earnings conference call that the company has been on an acquisition spree, buying 24 companies in the last 18 months.

I'm not a fan of iOS or the iPhone itself, but I will always respect Apple and want to see what they come up with next. I really want to see how this aquisition plays out. Will keep my eyes on the Spot for updates.

I LOL'd :D
How can you call in innovation when you didn't innovate, but rather acquired? Now, I don't have anything against this acquisition, but come on...that's not innovating.

However, Apple does have a tendency to actually USE tech they "innovate by acquire", so that could lead to a good thing for the entire industry; that is, if they release a phone that makes a leap in how long the battery lasts...because then Samsung could "innovate by acquire" too! LOL jk jk :p

Yeah the acquisition brings some real potential to the table.

It is still innovation. When you buy a compony with innovative people. They are still innovating for you. Do they not? Also it was called beefing up innovation. Not innovating in the article. Hopefully these technologies will save power not by minimizing use but by legit means were you able to use the hack out of the gadget at a less power cost. I love the mac book pro that falls asleep every second to save power and if you make it not it will last as much as a pc laptop. So much for the 8 hour claim. Try to watch movies or play games for 8 hours on that battery.
