Apple hits post-Brexit Britain for a second time, increasing app store prices by 25%

More bad news for post-Brexit Britain. For the second time in three months, Apple is raising the cost of its UK products as a result of the plummeting pound. This time, it’s the price of apps and in-app purchases that will be affected.

Applications that were previously on sale for £0.79 ($0.97) will soon sell for £0.99 ($1.22). Tier 2 priced apps, meanwhile, will jump from £1.49 ($1.84) up to £1.99 ($2.45), according to a report from 9to5Mac. Even more expensive titles like Super Mario Run that now cost £7.99 ($9.85) will increase to £9.99 ($12.32).

The changes are expected to come into effect sometime within the next seven days. It’s not just the UK that will be hit by the higher prices, fluctuating foreign exchange rates and taxation changes mean customers in Turkey and India will also be paying more for their apps.

The move follows Apple’s decision in October to increase the UK price of every computer in its line, including three-year-old MacBooks (by over $600), Mac Minis, and even the new MacBook Pros.

A number of companies have upped the cost of their UK goods following the country’s decision to leave Europe back in July.  Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, HP, HTC, and OnePlus have all blamed currency fluctuations for the rising price of their products.

In a statement, Apple explained that “price tiers on the App Store are set internationally on the basis of several factors, including currency exchange rates, business practices, taxes, and the cost of doing business. These factors vary from region to region and over time."

Only 25% increase? What's wrong with them. Were they feeling generous all of a sudden, or perhaps that was just a mistake, it was meant to be a 75% increase which is more like it and will soon be corrected. I'm leaning towards the latter.

This is completely illogical. If a currency becomes DE-valued then if anything prices should go DOWN. Apple doesn't build a damn thing in the UK so it has virtually no "cost of doing business" there other than from importing.

My guess, ON PURPOSE. How DARE the people of England, remove themselves from the "greater collective".
England, and their people, are being punished, for wanting to be a 100% sovereign nation.

*facepalm
really dude? it should go down?
I really hope that you are just trolling and I didn't understand the joke :D

Who would have thought that Brexit would be one of the Catalysts for Apple's demise? Apple is already overpriced, greed will kill them in the end.

I dunno man, Goldman sachs never died of greed and it's stage 10. Meaning the stage 4-5 which should've been the end didn't kill 'em and yet they're dead inside, so they're a kinda pseudo-zombie thaaang

That's not how it works from the sell side. In this case, a strong Dollar and a weaker Pound means that Apple extracts less profit (and therefore less margin) on phones sold in Britain. In order to maintain the margin, they need to increase the price to offset the decline in the Pound.

You seem to be confusing this with the buy side, where Apple would benefit from lower labor costs relative to the US.

Of course this has nothing to do with Brexit really... Apple loves to take all possible opportunities to raise prices. Normally, market factors would limit how much they could do this (I.e. you'd raise prices too much, your additional per-unit profit is wiped out by lower demand.) But, you know how Apple purchasers are; they seem to be willing to justify paying any price for their products.

Yeah but they managed to get themselves classed as "too big to fail" so the Gov't kept them afloat and charged the taxpayer. I doubt Apple will be painted with that brush, at least I hope not. :)

Yea totally dude. Imagine if when the boss tries to fire you you just turn around and scream I AM TOO BIG TO FAIL !!!!

What a motivational phrase too isnt it? Self help books be like, yea every morning at 7:30, tell yourself I am too big to fail, I am too big to fail...

It's not just more expensive to live here for the "tech" crowd but for literally everyone and everything. My chances of getting a mortgage or owning a house went from already incredibly slim to basically non existent. The price for pretty much everything (fuel, food, electric etc...) has gone up but salary's across the board have remained stale. No one is earning any more money yet are spending considerably more to do everything. Eventually people (such as myself I guess) will have to make the decision to move to another country. Anywhere warmer and doesn't cost you 3/4 of your salary to rent a tiny, dirty, worn out 1 bedroom flat would do me.

Freedom comes at a cost and blame the morons who agreed to be shackled to the UN- New World Order-International Monetary Fund gang of crooks in the first place, now controlled by super-wealthy Ahaharab Shakies whose long-term plot is to dominate the world. Look at many of your towns in Britain and who are the dictators in those towns, certainly not the true local men and women in their flat caps and headscarves who lived and worked in free Britain after a massive number of good men and women died fighting to keep Britain free.
You owe it to them that you still speak English and can go for a 'pint' whenever you choose, and ignore the stupidity and nonsense-speak of 'Political Correctness.
Why not move to Australia as I and many people did, at least you don't freeze your a'r'ce off in winter for a few months.

Australia is on the table. It's not just Winter when it's cold here, it's basically every single day with the exception of 2 weeks during the summer :D

Up til now I thought Australia was hot and dusty like our American south west, and there were still gunfights in the outback, while the Aussie army was relentlessly trying to usurp the Aboriginal's lands to build dude ranches for Chinese tourists. No?

Greed made them what they are, worlds biggest tech company. I don't like them much but it's true.
