Apple: you must be at least 17 years old to use Opera

I'm not surprised Opera has (17) label in Apple store. Considering all Apple users are brain challenged zombies, you must be at least 17 to comprehend that there is alternative (better) software out there.

The Truth is Apple needs to by law put the 17+ rating on anything that may get content that is offending. They rate all applications on the store. Look at the rating page. This is a legal thing. Safari is built in so it doesn't have that rating.
As for people who use legal things like this to bash Apple, please look at the way other companies handle this issue. Andriod market place had mailware on there marketplace and had to pull it off instead of reviewing each item.
You may not like the Apple policies or think they are restricting things for competition. However you need restriction in this world for things to work well together. Unfortunately there is no such thing as an open market since offensive things that are sold through Apple will then bring law suites against them.
As for all of you who hate Apple so much, enjoy your 10,000 new viruses a month on windows.

They're assuming people will be using Opera only to browse "adult sites"?

Reference to an old historical quote, We have met the enemy and they are us. Apple has become what they were against in the beginning, no surprise, it happens.

If they are so concerned by apps security, what about start by not running apps as root by default.
But well, then you will not be able to say all security problems are app developers fault... not iOS

Wow, people seem to be posting all sort of things without doing any research first -- I guess it's modern day journalism.

Try downloading ANY app that has unrestricted internet priviledges ( any SSH, FTP, whatever ), and you will be prompted when installing that you need to be over 17. The reasoning was -and still is- that providing generic access to the internet allows you to visit any kind of site, including "over 17" sites. Since rating always depend on a wost-case-scenario, rating here is over 17.

This has nothing to do with Opera, Safari, or any other app specifically, it's how things in the App Store work. Make what you will of it.

see its that kind of ridiculous crap that gets kids to buy into the macbook scam. most windows problems are due to user error - a person is going to treat their computer like **** regardless of what kind it is. if you want to pay $2k to check your facebook thats your problem. i will do just fine with my $350 eee pc that runs like dream.

so people over the age of 17 are less susceptible to online threats?

Nope!

The problem with this mindset is that the Android marketplace doesn't place the same "17 or over" rating on Opera, or anything even remotely similar.

Secondly, adult sites have their own "legal" maneuver and it's the "lie and say you're 18" entrance link. Apple could be legally expunged from any recourse for this reason. To suggest that Apple alone is the entity who is responsible for parental controls 100% is absolutely ludicrous.

Thirdly, about the 10,000 new viruses on Windows thing... I didn't have that happen to me last month. Did anyone else running Windows have 10,000 viruses hit them last month? Very very doubtful.

Try another lie.

Thank you kindly.

Sincerely,

Vengeful Sinner

Dumb article. All browsers on the App Store are rated 17+, as are most other apps that are capable of downloading unmoderated/uncurated content. Big yawn.

Apple only approves browsers that don't support flash, they wouldn't dare eat their own words.
For all you simple minded followers of the overlord steve jobs who love HTML5 because master says so... I got 1 word... Molehill

ok honestly this is stupid the browser was actually released last year around this time there is no new version that is "native". All of this aside Opera has failed to make any updates throughout a year. They failed not Apple. I am in support of those parental controls. I am sorry for any of you who don't know how to parent your kids. But behaviour like this is why alot of your kids get a skewed view of things through the parts of the web. Heck I like porn I like rated r movies and that but I also had a mother that taught me right from wrong since "most" (not all) modern parents are too lazy to teach that, these controls help. Not trying to be a jerk, but obesity in children, bad behaviour and failure in school are mainly rooted from poor parenting. not an increase in mental diseases or any other poor excuse they have out there. Oh and if you don't like Mac or say you don't but you have never had one for longer than 15 minutes at best buy then your opinion really doesn't count because most of you I find hate it based on a disposition you got on it as you were younger and you have no clue what its about at all. Not try to flame but this war is stupid a two front war that never wins either side. honestly there are going to be genrations of success among different companies for different things. Microsoft doesnt rule anymore, and standards have been met by all companies to make it level choose ur brand cause it does good by you dont diss a brand in ignorance cause you feel like it.

Peace

Stop abusing the Name of God for name's sake.......get something useful to write on the wall!

They do this for every browser because they don't want a lawsuit when some ten year old discovers the internet is full of porn. Stop this sensationalist bs and do some research. You should all be embarrassed at the Apple hating sheep you've become, you're becoming worse than the people who love Apple. It's one thing to dislike a company, it's another to blindly believe any crap you read.

You know what? Now I'm feed up with both Microsoft and Apple. Why don't we all just move to Linux...

LOL, Linux was an OS invented for SMART people, not a lot of people get a college education
"6.7% Of World Has College Degree ", so switching over to linux would not be a smart move, and Apple is the most simplified version of linux and you can see how many people don't really understand that. Oh and no one ever said mac's couldn't get viruses, why would they have antivirus programs for mac then? It's just that it's a proven fact that it gets way less viruses than windows, main reason for this is because the retards who make viruses usually attack windows more than mac, since more people use windows.

Obviously, Apple/Safari is afraid of Opera ... everyone knows you have a lousy product when you must resort to BS like this. These are the ways of a childish mind.

The truth is: No they aren't required by ANY law to put the age restriction there: the age restriction is according to Apple's own policies which, at times are VERY bias. I'd really love for you to find me that law, mainly because I know that it doesn't exist. Also, why are you bringing up Android? That's the smartphone market, not the desktop market. You also claim that _I_ need restrictions on _MY_ computer to make sure that it works "well." That's just plain insulting. As for your Open Market, and virus claims? I use Linux, as I am typing this there are exactly 29,292 software packages available for installation in my "software repositories" (fancy talk for app store,) all of them malware free. Oh, I also have a computer running Windows 7, and I've yet to run into trouble with it. I'll be blatant here: You have to be completely and utterly incapable of executing the most basic of logic in order to be infected with malicious software. You have to be the type of person that practically looks for viruses to get them, and have no antivirus installed as a backup (there's plenty of free ones that work as well, if not better than paid for ones.) Oh, and by no means am I defending windows, it's just that technically speaking no matter how much you don't want to believe it Windows is no less secure than OSX. Just like no matter how much you want to believe they put that age limit there for legal reasons, you're wrong. Period.

Here, genius, let me break a couple of things down for you.

1. Linux doesn't require a college degree. Anybody can use it. Have you tried distributions like Ubuntu or Linux Mint recently? The install process is quite literally: "Burn CD -> Boot off CD -> Select either "install alongside other OS" or "use entire hard drive" -> Set user name & password -> install. Actually using the system is stupidly simple these days as well. And all of this is ignoring the fact that even college campuses are full of village *****s.
2. Apple is not a simplified version of Linux, as OS X is Unix-based, and Linux shares no original code with Unix.
3. The presence of antivirus programs on OS X has nothing to do with the actual presence of viruses on the platform. Most OS X users are converts from Windows, so they are used to the idea of having protection against viruses, and so they feel the need to invest in antivirus software. That's not to say that viruses don't exist for the platform; it's just that the number of viruses that exist are so tiny and non-threatening that having an antivirus consuming resources on OS X is sheer waste. They're snake oil. People waste their money on useless crap they really don't need for the sake of feeling secure (i.e, people need their "security blanket"). This is how it has always been, and always will be.
4. Security through obscurity is a half-truth, and deeply flawed. It COMPLETELY ignores the fact that the very architectures of Windows and *nix systems are ENTIRELY different. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_through_obscurity

no, linux was an OS invented by people! it was based on old unix architecture (ps. if you say linux is unix, then you are misguided!) linux itself is older than windows & os/x.

the app store was not invented by apple like they say, it was invented by linux & linux has been using app stores (under a diff name for over 10 years now).

Os/X is based on Darwin & various other open-source systems like BSD & linux. but it is not derived from linux.

they have anti-virus because of the fact that people use E-mail, and just because your PC may not be vulnerable to Virus does not mean that you can't unadvertently forward infected files onto other people that may or may not be running vulnerable software. MAC has a lot of viruses in the wild, so don't be fooled.

Linux on the other hand because of it's actual architecture isn't 100% immune, but unless you are completely Dumb and actually really work extremely hard at it, viruses would not be able to execute & infect a linux machine. the people that say well windows is most widely used, thats why there's more viruses, are extremely naive & ignorant to the inner workings & architectural differences between windows and linux + os/x. even if linux was more popular than windows, it would still be 98% more immune to viruses, & you would have to work really hard to infect a linux box with a virus (ie, the virus itself couldn't execute or infect the machine without some serious help in doing so from YOU the human operator & you couldn't say you did it accidentally).

Because they work in the way we desire and expect them to, and the alternatives are far worse, in our opinions. Not surprisingly, I say exactly the same thing as you about Microsoft products, and I'm sure the answer to that is the same. That being said, this is pretty ill-conceived on Apple's part.

I have to agree about a lot of the Apple users being brainwashed into not seeing past the app store. Reminds me of the AOL users of years ago that thought AOL's content was the whole Internet. Apple shouldn't knock Opera though...I've been using Opera for the last few months and it pretty much blows every other browser I have ever used out of the water. Mark my words: Someday soon Opera will be THE web browser to have on every desktop and notebook platform.
