Apple's first "full-screen" iPhone could arrive in 2024

Something to look forward to: The first full-screen iPhone – that is, one without a front-facing camera notch or a Home button – could arrive in 2024. Respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said high-end iPhones in 2024 (the iPhone 16, assuming Apple sticks with its current naming convention) could adopt an under-display front-facing camera as well as under-display Face ID tech.

Kuo's latest remarks build on his previous stance that Apple is no longer interested in integrating a Touch ID-based fingerprint reader under the front screen. The general consensus was that Apple could launch an iPhone with an under-screen fingerprint reader in 2023 as Face ID didn't work all that well for those wearing masks.

Apple has since made improvements to Face ID to boost reliability when wearing a mask, largely eliminating the need to revert back to fingerprint biometrics.

Innovation in the mobile space has been increasingly scarce to come by as of late, especially when you filter out the obvious gimmicks. Instead, we've had to make do with incremental updates that are impressive as a whole but don't individually blow your socks off.

An iPhone without a notch would fall into this category and could trigger a significant upgrade cycle as there are no doubt plenty of existing smartphone owners waiting for a flagship iPhone without the eye sore. It'd also free up more screen real estate, making it even more desirable for full-screen gaming and video-watching.

By "setting off" you mean turning on the screen by touching it when picking up the phone? Maybe you have Raise to Wake enabled, because your iPhone shouldn't wake up when you grab it. It needs a clear tap on the screen or power button press.

That gawd-awful notch is the only reason why I've yet to try an iPhone. My current phone is a OnePlus 7 Pro, which is the rare phone having a 100% edge-to-edge display. The front-facer is a popup camera, which works just fine. Such an all-screen display was a game changer for me, and I'll never go back.

But I've never owned an Apple product and this could lead me to try one.

I couldn't care less about the MicroSD card slot but yes, the 3.5mm headphone jack is definitely somewhere up there on the list of things that I want back. And this is coming from a person who wants to buy a pair of AirPods Pro because just about everything I've read and watched says they sound absolutely great.

And yes, I've used a lot of earbuds in the past and they all sound like tinny crap. I'm done buying cheap crap, I want quality and I don't care if I have to pay for it.

For keyboard lovers the Fxtec Pro1X is basically the only modern option for practical design. The fact that it comes with LineageOS out of the box (as an option) is a huge plus, not to mention it has user replaceable battery, microSD slot, and of course, a headphone jack.

As an Android (OnePlus 8 Pro) and iOS user and developer I’d strongly suggest you borrow one for a few days first. If you’re a heavy Android user you might be very disappointed by the limitations iOS has. It’s still a great phone mind you, very polished and secure. I’ve recently acquired an iPhone 13 Pro. I was amazed by the screen, camera and high refresh screen (finally). But after 2 days of use I just couldn’t find a reason for the price hike and lacking features that have been available on Android for years now. Good luck

Full screen display.. yeah that would be nice but for the camera to stop sticking out from the bottom of the case, now THAT wound be a revolutionary change, that simply haven’t happened before!… wait.. 8-/
