Are unknown instant messages a threat?

Hey all,

I just wanted to ask if you think unknown instant messages are much of a threat? I've had a couple of IM's from unknown contacts that say "how are you?" and then they do not say anything nor do they respond when i ask who it is. Is it a security risk to respond to them? I know not to open any unknown files or anything like that. I don't have any spyware or viruses in my computer, but can I get some kind of virus or spyware from theses IM's if I respond?
