To put a little more perspective on my post. During winter months we use well over 20 bucks in power a day.
Old large houses take quite a lot to heat.
That's crazy - Just waiting a quote for uPVC windows , door and French door install - uPVC is more expensive in NZ - as not as common as aluminum double glazing - plus has to survive high UV damage - was initially doing rooms with ripping out lathe and plastering- insulating relining etc - final rooms will just get some company to pump fluff into wall cavities - replace down lights ( now LED ) with led ceiling lights - Throw another layer of insulation in roof space to existing , throw polythene sheets down under house to stop rising moisture - already insulation in floor frames .
Already have a heat ventilation exchanger to get fresh air - and lower humidity .
Will not get ROI - but wife loves it warm - cheaper just to retrofit kitchen big aluminium windows to double glazing ( they turn single to double in situ ) - bit of fluff/wool blown in walls - some honey cone curtains in from of French doors and lounge windows .
However why not
For me if I put on my down booties - fleece pants - merino long sleeve top . Possum/merino beanie and jersey - probably be fine down to near zero Celsius and not feel bulked up.
Possum/merino is much nicer to the skin than straight wool - great socks as well - maybe NZ only product that we export - Possums unlike Australia , USA are a pest and not endangered at all
If you know some old person who is poor living alone and can't afford heating .
Best gifts are down booties and electric throw, and an easy to wear merino/fleece beanie - The throw a very soft fleece electric blanket they can cover themselves with probably only 100 to 200w but they will be warmer than a 2kw bar heater in an uninsulated room - except when they are on the move
