AT&T is getting roasted for its fake 5G network icons

  1. At the end of 2018, AT&T announced that it would begin branding some of its 4G LTE network as 5G Evolution. This is not 5G and is nothing more than LTE with the same features that Verizon and other competitors are now using.

Placing the 5G E logo on a number of Android handsets has caused outcry from the public as well as from AT&T's rivals. The practice is intentionally very misleading and is not representative of any real breakthrough in technology.

Verizon's Chief Technology Officer has now made a post that is directly taking jabs at AT&T for their false representation of what 5G actually is and what it means. According to the CTO Kyle Malady, the key requirements for true 5G are new radio technology, new hardware in connected devices, and the ability to achieve what is not possible on existing LTE networks.

T-Mobile took its own approach to roasting AT&T for their poor judgment and kept it short with a Tweet. Apparently 9G is just as easy to implement when all you are doing is changing the number on a screen.

Thankfully, it appears AT&T will be the only carrier blatantly misrepresenting 5G on their devices. The addition of upgraded LTE features such as 256QAM, improved carrier aggregation, and 4x4 MIMO still do not change the fact that a network is still LTE. If AT&T were to begin using the mmWave spectrum, the story might be different. However, real 5G networking will not be useful until later this year.

This is a case where AT&T is knowingly and very intentionally misleading consumers that do not understand upcoming technology. Despite the obvious fact, there has not yet been a motion from the FTC or FCC to impose penalties on the company.

AT&T has always done these things. Remember "More Bars in More Places" anyone? There weren't.

The better thing is that 4G LTE is just 4G, and what the companies labeled as 4G does not meet the 4G specs either, and is in fact just 3.5g (or .... 3G LTE? 3G Advanced?) AT&T is trying to label 4G as 5G in the same way they named 3G as 4G without meeting the specs. FTC needs to grow a set and drop the hammer.

AT&T and the other carriers own the FCC the same what that big pharma and big agriculture own the FDA. Its been this way for at least 20 years, sadly.

LOL at the slam from t-mobile (the worst cell provider).

There are both state and federal laws to curtail false advertising. The CTO of AT&T also needs to be serving jail time for it in additional to the company percentage fines?

Fines need to be by percentage of a company rather than a fixed number. Maybe then companies will start waking up rather than just shrug (comparably small) fines off.

Good! The problem is, consumers, in no small part, are woefully ignorant of how things work, and
probably most of them will say "wow my phone is faster".

They all use the same cell towers why would one be 5G and the rest would be 4G The LTE is just the chipset.

    Isn't 5g really just 4g though?

from what I remember 4g was suppose to be a longterm solution which is why LTE stand for "long term evolution", seems these sneaky companies are once again tossing a new name out so they can toss out some new prices also.

AT&T is just a joke in general.
