I recieved a virus yesterday. My desktop has change to a blue background that says "Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC. Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity. It is strongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities. Antispyware software helps protect your PC against spyware and other security threats." This is my desktop that says this.
I can no longer use Ctrl, Alt, Del. I get an error message saying "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator." I've tried all the methods on restoring this, and it still doesn't work. I've ran Ad-Aware SE Proffessional and Spybot search and Destroy. It finds spyware, but the problem is still there, and eventually everthing that it finds, re-appears again. Please help!

This is going around like the flu.

Make sure you have a firewall, If you already have one disregard this step. Only 1 firewall is necessary

You aren't running Firewall Software. Please download and install one of these first!

Use a Firewall - It is very important that you use a Firewall on your computer. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's enough but it only controls inbound traffic. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most commonly used:

Vista Compatible:
Comodo
Zonealarm

Actually I'm not a malware removal expert
But this may help you to get it back mostly to normal again:

Download Smitfraud Fix
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Clean:

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode
(before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe

Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes)
and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if you are infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:

To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
----------------------------------------------------

Additional Steps:

(Start -Run)
sc stop Messenger
sc config Messenger start= disabled

Then continue to Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions

Also:

In regards to the task manager

Download RatsCheddar.zip http://www.castlecops.com/zx/sjpritch25/RatsCheddar.zip

It contains a program written by Rathat, and it is a Policy Controller.
Save and extract this program to the desktop.
Once extracted, click on the RatsCheddar.exe file.
Enable everything, then click Exit
Reboot your Computer.

Your HiJackThis version is now old
Please uninstall HiJackThis fully
Then go here: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/317-trend-micro-hijackthis.html
And download the newest version 2.02

Before runing another HiJackThis log
I would suggest that you also download CCleaner and Startup Control Panel

Please follow my directions to the letter, in order, or I cannot help you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything in the MBAM log says No Action Taken

My instructions said "Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where is the Combofix log, this infection has mutated since yesterday and you appear to have the new version.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please reattempt the above posted instructions. In order. Take your time and make sure you do it right. It will save us both time in the long run.

I don't mean to sound rude, but I don't have the time to repeat instructions.

I expect you to have an active firewall installed when I look at your logs, next time. There is no point in fixing this infection, if we don't secure your computer first, as it seems to come right back on machines with no firewall.

When you are done please attach:
1) MBAM log
2) Combofix log
3) Hijackthis log

You can attach the logs by clicking Post Reply -> then clicking the paperclip Icon above your reply -> navigate to the logs and select attach.

You need to be using an account that has administrative privileges. The infection may have disabled you as an administrator. Did you run Fixpolicies yet?

At the very bottom of my first post

I did the fixpolicies. Still not Task Manager. As far as the MBAM log. I think I may have copied the log before I clicked remove selected. I will try again.

Ok, when MBAM is done!

You might want to copy and paste these instructions into a notepad file, and save it to your desktop. Then you can have the file open in safe mode, so you can follow the instructions easier.

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.

Ok. I did everything you said. THere seems to be some problems though. Here are the problems.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmsdkns.exe <-This file only ( would not delete)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ifenypkv<-This folder only (ifenypkv) did not exist

Kaspersky doesn't remove infections just points them out. The good news everything it found was in Quarantine through the programs we used. How is your computer running? Any symptoms?

First lets get rid of Spybot backups Navigate to the following folder and delete everything there:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery

Dont delete the folder just everything in it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall Combofix
* Click START then RUN
* Now type Combofix /u in the runbox
* Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /u
* Then hit Enter.

* The above procedure will:
* Delete the following:
* ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
* Reset the clock settings.
* Hide file extensions, if required.
* Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
* Set a new, clean Restore Point.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cleanup using OTMoveit2 by OldTimer
Now we can clear out the rest of the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if launched accidentally.

Download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer OTMoveIt2.exe and place it on your desktop.

1. Double click OTMoveIt2.exe to launch it.
If using Vista Right-Click OTMoveIt and choose Run As Administrator
2. Click on the CleanUp! button.
3. OTMoveIt2 will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
4. Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)

* When finished exit out of OTMoveIt2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recommend you keep
1 anti virus program
1 firewall
Combo of Anti-Spyware (Spybot S&D and MBAM, or your choice)

For Spybot you can download the latest version from HERE.

keep them updated.

You can also turn on tea timer in Spybot:
  • Click on Mode at the top and make sure that Advanced is checked
  • Expand the Tools tab in the left pane
  • Single click on the Resident Icon also in the left pane
  • check Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) Active
  • Close spybot

Also under Tools you can double-click System Startup in the right pane and disable programs from running at startup. This will free up system resources. For example if you don't use MSN Messenger everytime you run your computer you can disable it, then when you want to use it you can launch it through Start -> all programs, or make a shortcut on the desktop for it. That way it doesn't use resources when you aren't using it. Don't disable any entries in green though.

And just to be sure
Set correct settings for files
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

clear system restore points

  • This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Cool. All done! The only error I get, is during start up.

Error Loading C:\Windows\System32\NvCpl.dll) A dynamic link library (DLL) intialization failed.

The nVidia control Panel icon that sits down near your clock. (usually)

You should be able to remove this startup by either going to your Display properties advanced page.
And locating the tick that says, show tray icon, and then unticking it.

Or download Startup Control Panel, and untick it from in there

Ok. It's back. I don't know whats going on, but I'm getting virus alerts like every minute. I didn't visit any crazy sites or anything. I was on youtube. My task manager is even disabled again. This time it seems to have more effect on how my computer is running.
