Recently I have been attempting to install Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 on my 10 year old Dell Compaq Presario laptop. The laptop was, until recently, installed with Ubuntu Linux 14.04.
I insert the disc, boot up the laptop, and receive a prompt to press a key to boot from the disc.
I press a key, and the laptop loads for a few seconds then tells me it is checking my hardware.
Then there is a blank screen.
This screen never vanishes, and it always stays blank. It has been left for well over 5 minutes without a flicker of change.
I have taken some steps to try to fix this problem - first I went into the BIOS and changed native SATA mode to disabled. No change. Then I booted a live CD of GParted and erased all partitions on the HDD. No change.
I'm starting to become a little dispirited - please help! I can’t find any advice on the error that I haven’t followed.
Thanks!
