I've just built my first rig.

Everything is new apart from the CD Drive and the Hard Drive

However, my computer is only letting me boot up in SAFE mode so I have decided to Re-Install Windows.

I go into the BIOS and select boot up from CD ROM

All that happens is that I'm given a message that reads...

"Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device"

I need to re-install windows. Anyone know how to solve this error?

Hi

IDE devices have jumpers that decide if they are a slave or master.

hard drive on primary one set it to master

CD rom on secondary set it to master

However some CD's arent bootable devices, something about not being atapi compatible.

Your only option then would be to get a different drive

Thanks.
I only have one IDE slot though :( So I have to run both on the same cable and I have set the jumpers accordingly.

It appears that I have indeed seen a message about not being ATAPI compatible.
What does that mean?

What mobo? Are you trying to keep the IDE and boot Sata?

If you connect an IDE (Pata) hd and an IDE cd rom to the same cable, the hd is limited to transfer speeds of the cd unless Independant Device Timing exists.

So,I suggest you set both to cable select and connect the cd to the end and the hd to middle.

The Blue end (you ARE using an 80 wire 40 pin cable?) goes to the mobo.

ECS 7050M-M

Thats my motherboard.

I tried setting the Hard Drive to Cable Select. Didn't work.

I bought a SATA drive and put the DVD drive on the Master IDE to see if it would work.

I'm still getting the same error

"Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device"

So, boot select in Bios is set to what?

1 - floppy
2 - cd
3 - Sata drive

You have the Sata configged in Bios as what? IDE with Enhanced support?

The boot sequence is set to

1. CD
2. HDD
3. Floppy (even though my system doesn't have one.)

I'm not sure what you mean by "what is the SATA configged as"..
In the bios I've set it to Auto if that helps.

Looking at the manual for the 7050M-M V2 (hope that's yours).

In Bios, with the DVD connected to the end of the IDE cable and the jumpers on CS and the IDE HD disconnected, does the Bios see the DVD?

edit: as for the Sata drive, what do you have for options under 'SATA Mode select (SATA Mode)'?

Thanks for taking the time to help...

The DVD is connected to the end of the IDE cable and I just changed the jumpers to CS.

The BIOS does see the DVD drive.

The SATA mode is set to SATA

The 'manual' doesn't say what those choices are - besides Sata, what else?

edit: and set 'OnBoard Floppy Controller' to 'Disabled' since you don't have one and make sure you remove it from the Boot select.

OK - so Bios sees the dvd, you set Boot Order for DVD, Sata Drive and then F10 to save settings.

Then insert the install cd in the dvd and try to boot.

.

Yup... Tried that now...

Once the computer boots I get that message again..

"Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device"

Do you think I need to try and connect a different CD Drive?

Try another proper IDE cable if you can and another cd/dvd.

Older cables fail often.

I'm using a brand new cable so I'm going to rule that out.

I might have to get my hands on a different cd drive to test it out. Hopefully it will work.

Can you remove the floppy from the boot order completley as you don't have one, this can cause problems``

You;re install CD itself could be the problem any chance you can try another

I tried disabling the Floppy Drive and that didn't do anything.. It may be the installation XP disc I'm using.

I'll try to get my hands on a different copy tomorrow
